  • Brock chemist heads to Parliament Hill to showcase MRI research

    MEDIA RELEASE: 15 May 2017  – R00095

Brock University research aimed at making MRI procedures safer and more effective for Canadians will be showcased on Parliament Hill this week.

Associate Professor of Chemistry Melanie Pilkington and her Brock research group are developing a new family of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents that would sharpen MRI images, allowing for earlier detection of diseases such as cancer.

Dosages of the new agents could also be smaller, increasing patient safety.

Pilkington will be in Ottawa Wednesday, May 17 to discuss this work during Research Matters’ annual Pop-Up Research Park.

Brock is one of 15 universities in Ontario that Research Matters invited to set up displays and be on hand to explain their research to Members of Parliament and their staff.

Research Matters is a public outreach initiative that explores how Ontario university research is transforming daily life and improving how people live, work and play across the province and around the world.

For more details of the Pilkington group’s research, see story in The Brock News.

For a quick presentation of the MRI contrast agent work by former Brock University graduate student Emma Gavey, see the 2015 Three Minute Thesis Competition presentation.

Pilkington will be available for interviews on Wednesday, May 17.

  • Brock hosting national lifeguard championships this weekend

    MEDIA RELEASE: 12 May 2017 – R00094

More than 60 lifeguards from across Canada will put their lifesaving skills to the test this weekend.

Brock University will host the Canadian Lifeguard Emergency Response Championships Saturday, May 13 and Sunday, May 14 in the Walker Sports Complex.

Organized by the Lifesaving Society, the championships are an opportunity for lifeguards — whose first priority is saving lives — to get competitive with their craft.

Lifeguards on 17 different teams from Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia will compete in events that simulate real lifesaving and lifeguarding rescues such as first aid, priority assessment and water rescue.

Because the competition is taking place throughout the weekend, there will be free family fun swims on Saturday and Sunday from 1—3:30 p.m. There may be some interruptions as the competition will be running, but the public are encouraged to attend and be part of the event.
