  • Brock awards scholarships to 56 Niagara high school students

    MEDIA RELEASE 2 June 2017 – R00109

Dozens of students from high schools across Niagara have been given a financial boost as they start their post-secondary studies.

For the third year in a row, Brock University has awarded the Niagara Principal’s Scholarships to two students from nearly every public, Catholic and private secondary school in the region.

Each of the 56 students were awarded $2,500 toward the cost of their first-year tuition at Brock, for a total of $140,000. To date, the Niagara Principal’s Scholarship program has awarded more than $422,000 to 169 students across the region.

“This scholarship was initiated in 2015 as a critical partnership to recognize student excellence within Niagara, and actively engage in the development of our region’s future leaders,” said Beth Natale, Director, Recruitment and Retention. “Offering this substantial financial award is a concrete example of Brock University doing its part to ensure Niagara’s student leaders remain committed to this region, considering Brock and the Niagara region as the top choice for their future.”

The recipients for the scholarships are selected by the principals from each school based on a combination of academic achievements and the students’ involvement in school and in the community.

  • Voices of Eagles art exhibition on display at Rodman Hall

    MEDIA ADVISORY: 6 June 2017 – R00110

An opening reception will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, June 8 for Voices of Eagles, a new exhibit at Rodman Hall by students in the Soaring Eagles Indigenous Secondary School Program of the Niagara Catholic District School Board.

The Soaring Eagles program provides an alternative learning environment, which focuses on the inclusiveness of cultural knowledge and teachings into the curriculum to help support Aboriginal students and to also provide education and awareness to non-Aboriginal students.

Following the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Report of 2015, students in the Soaring Eagles program have embraced visual arts as a tool for reflection and understanding as to what the report’s Calls to Action mean to them as Aboriginal youth.

This project has been co-ordinated with assistance from Kelsey Dick, Educator, and Sherry Emmerson, Native Resource Co-ordinator at the Soaring Eagles Indigenous Secondary School Program. It is presented in partnership with Peter Vietgen, Associate Professor of Visual Arts, Faculty of Education, Brock University, and the students and staff from the Soaring Eagles program.

Voices of Eagles will be on display at Rodman Hall until June 24.
