    MEDIA RELEASE: 5 October 2018 – R00174

From buying local products and services to employing some 4,800 people, Brock University’s impact on Niagara is immense.

A new policy brief set to be released by the Niagara Community Observatory (NCO) Wednesday, Oct. 10 will give an updated snapshot of the University’s economic impact.

“This brief will offer a glimpse into the economic impact Brock’s students, faculty and staff have on Niagara and beyond,” said NCO Director Charles Conteh. “It’s important to note this is a pilot project that sets the initial template for a longer process over the years of finessing our understanding of Brock’s economic and social footprint in Niagara.

The policy brief points out Brock University, with a record enrolment of more than 19,000 students, has an annual operating budget of $320 million and a payroll of more than $212 million.

Co-authored by Brock Associate Professor of Geography and Tourism Studies Jeff Boggs and master’s student Lauren Peddle (BA ’18) the brief focuses primarily on economics, but acknowledges the University’s impact in other areas such as community engagement, research and innovation.

  • Senior administration encouraging Brock community to vote

    MEDIA RELEASE: 3 October 2018  – R00173

When the advance poll for the upcoming municipal election opened at Brock’s main campus on Wednesday, senior administration came ready to cast their ballot.

University President Gervan Fearon and interim Provost and Vice-President, Academic Greg Finn, joined by Brock University Students’ Union President Aidan Hibma, exercised their democratic right in hopes of encouraging other members of the Brock community to do the same.

Brock held an advance poll on campus for the first time in its history on Wednesday, Oct. 3, allowing St. Catharines and Thorold residents to have an early say in the Oct. 22 election.

“We introduced the advance poll to make voting more accessible, not only for the Brock community but also for members of the general community who live or work nearby,” Fearon said. “With thousands of faculty, staff, students and community members on campus each day, it seemed a natural fit for Brock to be an advance poll site and to encourage residents to have a say in Niagara’s future.

“At Brock we encourage our students, faculty and staff to be engaged citizens and community members. The advanced poll on campus reflects Brock’s commitment to outstanding citizenship and community engagement,” he said.

The poll remained open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and community members visiting Market Hall to vote were provided free parking.

For more information on other advance polls available in the area or details on where to vote on Oct. 22, visit the Niagara Region municipal election website.
