Big crowd expected for Brock Homecoming weekend

MEDIA RELEASE: R00195 – 13 September 2016

More than 500 Brock University alumni and thousands of students will take part in Homecoming weekend festivities on and off campus Sept. 16-18.

Homecoming is one of the biggest weekend events at the University, featuring everything from reunions and athletic events to entertainment and themed celebrations.

A full list of Homecoming weekend events can be found here and all are open to the media.

Here are some of the highlights:

Grape Stomp
Friday, Sept. 16, Noon
Brock’s annual Grape Stomp has been called one of the Top 10 best Canadian university traditions. This year, close to 1,000 students are expected to take part in the messy grape-stomping party in Brock’s Jublilee Courtyard. Prizes will be handed out for best team spirit, best costumes and most donations to Brock’s food bank.

Arrangements can be made if reporters would like to take part in the grape stomp.

Tailgate Party/Steel Blade Classic
Friday, Sept. 16, 4 p.m. / 7 p.m.
Brock’s Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts is hosting the first-ever Homecoming Tailgate Party featuring a beer tent, BBQ, music and family friendly events.
From there, the party moves indoors when the Brock Badgers men’s hockey team will make history by playing their first game at the Meridian Centre, facing-off against the Guelph Gryphons in the annual Steel Blade Classic.

Media covering Friday night’s game should enter the Meridian Centre using the main box office entrance after 4 p.m.

Red Dinner
Saturday, Sept. 17, 5 p.m.
Homecoming’s signature event takes place in front of the Schmon Tower and features the delicious tastes of several local food trucks, Niagara wine and beer, and live music. This is the hottest ticket of Homecoming and has sold out the past two years.

Terry Fox Run
Sunday, Sept. 18, 10 a.m.
For the first time, Brock University officially has a team at the Terry Fox Run taking place Sunday in Port Dalhousie. Brock is fortunate to receive research funding through the Terry Fox Foundation, and the University is hoping for a team of staff, faculty, students and alumni.
