  • BUFA labour relations update (June 5)

The University bargaining committee continues to meet with the Brock University Faculty Association (BUFA), the union representing faculty members and professional librarians.

To date, the committees have held seven meetings and reached tentative agreements on several non-monetary articles. While this early progress is welcome, it reflects the more straightforward matters before us. As bargaining moves past the halfway point, the committees turn to a number of substantive and difficult issues — including scheduling, pedagogical supports, and artificial intelligence — where the Parties hold genuinely different perspectives. These conversations are likely to be demanding, and we do not underestimate the work required to reach agreement.

This round of bargaining also unfolds against a challenging financial backdrop. Universities across Canada are navigating significant fiscal pressures — shifting enrolment, constrained funding, and rising costs — and Brock is not immune to these realities. The University is committed to a fair and sustainable agreement, but one that must be reached with a clear view of the financial environment in which we operate. We approach the discussions ahead in good faith, mindful of both our shared interests and the difficult choices the broader sector now faces.

The University bargaining committee remains committed to working toward a negotiated collective agreement with BUFA by June 30, 2026.

    Next Steps

The bargaining committees will resume deliberations on June 8, 2026. The University will continue to provide updates as negotiations progress.

  • Brock, BUFA ratify new agreement

The University is pleased to announce that the tentative collective agreement reached between Brock University and the Brock University Faculty Association (BUFA) on June 21, 2017 has been ratified by both parties. The new collective agreement was reached following two months of productive discussions between the union and university’s negotiating committees.

Brock’s Board of Trustees would like to extend their appreciation to the BUFA negotiating team for their preparation and hard work throughout the process, which helped to ensure that the new collective agreement could be reached before the expiry of the current one.

Now that the agreement has been ratified, the new collective agreement (in draft form) will be available for review on the Human Resources webpage. The new three-year collective agreement came into effect on July 1, 2017.
