Cutting-edge research and innovative teaching is now taking place at the Cairns Family Health and Bioscience Research Complex thanks, in large part, to the support provided by the Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario, and the Niagara Region.
On Feb. 14, 2008 St. Catharines M.P.P. Jim Bradley announced that the Government of Ontario, as part of their investment in strategic infrastructure, would provide $33.5 million to support the Cairns Family Health and Bioscience Research Complex.
That same year, in September 2008, the Niagara Regional provided an additional $2 million to support.
On May 25, 2009 St. Catharines M.P. Rick Dykstra announced that the Government of Canada would be investing $38 million in the project through Industry Canada’s Knowledge Infrastructure Program (KIP).
The $111.4 million Cairns Complex is a 176,530-square-foot, state-of-the-art bioscience research facility located on the Brock University campus. The facility supports the work of leading researchers in the fields of biotechnology, plant pathology, green chemistry, and health and wellness. It also houses BioLinc, a bioscience, biotechnology and biomanufacturing business incubator, which supports the commercialization of the research occurring at Brock.
The new labs advanced equipment and enhanced teaching and learning spaces have strengthened Brock’s research capabilities and the opportunities available to Brock students. It will also be a major asset to the Niagara community, supporting the growth of businesses and new jobs in emerging industry clusters.
Brock would like to thank the Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario and the Niagara Region for their support and partnership. This partnership will build upon the University’s economic and research strengths to generate applied knowledge that will develop new and diverse industries and advance scientific capabilities in Niagara and beyond.
