Weeklong initiative supports student food security

Several events aimed at combating student food insecurity will take place on campus next week.

Held from Monday, Nov. 10 to Friday, Nov. 14, Food Security Week will welcome students to fill their stomachs at free food events hosted by Food First, a program run by the Brock University Students’ Union (BUSU) and Graduate Students’ Association.

“Food Security Week is a large part of the Food First program and our ongoing efforts to care for student well-being,” said Natalia Rodrigues-Rana, BUSU Vice-President, University Affairs. “The week’s events are designed to provide free, warm meals for Brock students so that they can have the energy and time to focus on their studies.”

The week’s events include:

  • Free Grab and Go Breakfast — Tuesday, Nov. 11 and Wednesday, Nov. 12 outside Union Station from 8:45 A.M. until supplies last. Students are encouraged to grab a quick meal on their way to class to help fuel up for the day ahead.
  • Read ‘Em to Feed ‘Em Mystery Book Sale — Tuesday, Nov. 11 at the General Brock store from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Books received by donation in October will be wrapped with only a description visible to help readers choose their next read. Some books even have a hidden surprise inside. All book sales will support the Food First program.
  • Free Sandwich Bar at the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts (MIWSFPA) — Wednesday, Nov. 12 in the MIWSFPA lobby. Food will be provided by Union Sammies and is one serving per student.
  • Free Hot Breakfast — Thursday, Nov. 13 from 7:30 a.m. until supplies last at Union Station. Enjoy pancakes, breakfast sausage, eggs, potatoes, juice, coffee and fresh fruit. Faculty and staff are also welcome with a $2 donation to support Food First.
  • Pizza with Politicians — Thursday, Nov. 13, from 7 to 9 p.m. in Residence 8. Students are invited to an evening of engaging discussions and networking with local politicians. Complimentary pizza and refreshments provided.

Students attending each event will have the chance to win one of five Food First prize bundles that include a $100 grocery gift card.
