Safe travel tips for winter weather

With winter weather arriving on campus early this year, Brock students, faculty and staff are reminded to be cautious while travelling in slippery conditions.

Tips for preventing weather-related slips, trips and falls:

  • Check the weather forecast before travelling and allow extra travel time if snow or icy conditions are expected.
  • Check the Brock Safety app and The Brock News for updates on campus closures due to inclement weather.
  • Wear boots and shoes designed for slippery weather conditions, such as those with deep treads and low heels.
  • Clear snow and ice from car windows, lights and licence plates before driving.
  • Park in lots or areas that have already been cleared of snow or ice and trying to park within parking space lines.
  • Take extra care when entering or exiting vehicles as ice can build up between parked vehicles.
  • Pay attention while walking.
  • Walk slowly on icy or snowy surfaces.
  • Stay on cleared pathways and avoiding non-pedestrian areas such as snowbanks or unofficial paths.
  • Follow illuminated travel routes before sunrise and after sunset.
  • Keep feet planted shoulder-width apart to increase stability.
  • Brush off debris from pant legs and footwear and shaking off water from umbrellas and jackets before entering a building.
  • Avoid carrying large objects that reduce visibility and limit the ability to land safely during a fall.

Members of the Brock community are also encouraged to familiarize themselves with the University’s Slip, Trip and Fall Prevention Program and to review the snow and ice removal priority map.

Slippery or unsafe conditions on outdoor pedestrian surfaces can be reported by calling the Facilities Management Customer Service One Call Hotline at 905-688-5550 x3717 or emailing [email protected] between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. from Monday to Friday.

Urgent slip and trip circumstances can be reported to Campus Safety Services at 905-688-5550 x3200 outside of these hours or when the University is closed.

A report should be made to a person of authority, such as an area supervisor or Brock employee, if an incident, injury, near miss or health and safety hazard is observed.  Circumstances should be reported through an injury/incident report. Completed reports and questions can be directed to [email protected]
