Fall filled with hands-on learning for Geography and Tourism students

More than 50 Brock students enjoyed hands-on learning experiences — and stunning fall foliage — during Reading Week field courses.

The group of students from arts and science programs in the Department of Geography and Tourism Studies was in the Peterborough, Ont., area from Oct. 12 to 17.

Students of physical geography completed water quality testing, studied the chemistry of water and soil, examined tree growth in the context of climate change and looked at the diversity of species of micro-invertebrates inhabiting local streams and lakes.

Students of human geography and tourism studies explored issues of food security among students at Trent University and Fleming College, public transportation and accessibility in downtown Peterborough, and impacts of the short-term rental market on the local economy and community as well as projects related to climate, masculinity and well-being.

Associate Professor Ebru Ustundag, Associate Professor David Goldblum, Adjunct Professor and photographer Jayson Childs and Master of Arts in Social Justice and Equity Studies student Emily Mills accompanied the students during their field work, continuing a long-standing tradition in the department.
