How are Canadian culture, politics and society evolving and adapting to new challenges and opportunities?
These critical questions are just some of the key themes and concepts students can explore through upcoming Spring/Summer courses at Brock.
“Understanding Canada means celebrating our strengths and confronting shortcomings. This is how we grow as a nation,” said Dan Malleck, Director of Brock’s Centre for Canadian Studies.
Students studying Canada contemplate what it means to live in a multicultural, diverse and complex society, said Malleck, who highlighted CANA 2P10 – Intercultural Communication in a Multicultural Canada as a key course for students looking to expand their understanding of Canada’s diversity. The course will discuss theories of intercultural communication and the roots of cultural differences in Canada.
“Considering the negative attention that diversity and inclusion gets from some people these days, intercultural understanding seems more critical than ever,” he said.
First-year courses offering introductions to Canadian identity (CANA 1F91 – Introduction to Canadian Studies) and health (HLSC 1F25 – Health: A Canadian Perspective) will equip students with an understanding of Canada’s makeup and contemporary issues.
Canada’s political landscape will be explained in POLI 2P12 – Canadian Government and Politics, cross listed with Canadian Studies (CANA 2P12).
The course will cover core institutions of Canadian government, including federalism, parliamentary government, electoral systems, the judiciary, constitutional rights and the machinery of government.
Discussions surrounding how these institutions shape — and are shaped — by political parties, Indigenous politics and other social forces will take centre stage.
DART 2P95 – Contemporary Canadian Indigenous Theatre for Non-Majors will offer students the chance to learn about the theatrical representation of Indigenous cultures in Canada, deepening perspectives on the significance of art and performance in society.
Other Spring/Summer courses related to Canada include:
- POLI 1P93 – Canada and the Global Community: Examining the impact of politics, economics, culture, society and globalization on Canada’s role in the community of nations.
- LABR 1P95 – Introduction to the Canadian Labour Movement: ExploresCanada’s labour movement through topics ranging from the historical development of unions and collective bargaining to unions in society and assessments of union effectiveness.
