Student business tote-ally captivates Campus Store shoppers

Third-year Psychology student Divit Payeng is bringing his business to life on campus thanks to a partnership between the Brock LINC and the Campus Store.

Launched in 2023, the Brock LINC x Campus Store Contest is open to all Brock students with a retail-based product and gives the winning student entrepreneur an opportunity to display and sell their products in the Campus Store.

As this year’s winner, Payeng will be able to sell his unique canvas tote bags in the Campus Store until April.

Payeng co-founded his business, The Tote Store, in India two years ago with his partner, Mishita Rungta, developing hand-embroidered tote bags that are functional pieces of art. Each bag has its own personalized touch, with designs including a wide range of flowers, plants and insects.

“Mishita and I both have a shared love for creativity. We knew that we wanted to offer something handmade and meaningful, so tote bags were perfect,” said Payeng.

Payeng has already had to restock the inventory in the Campus Store several times since his bags were first placed on shelves in September, highlighting their positive reception.

“I never imagined that something that we worked on would get this platform,” he said. “Students love how customizable and unique the bags are. We’ve received a lot of positive feedback, especially from students looking for something that is personalized and eco-friendly.”

Stephanie Nobles, Associate Director, Campus Store and Printing Services, said The Tote Store’s bags have been popular with the Brock community.

“From the moment they hit the shelves it was clear that customers appreciated the one-of-a-kind designs and hand-stitched artistry,” she said. “We’re pleased to provide visibility and promotional opportunities for The Tote Store and to support student entrepreneurs like Divit.”

As well as retail space and advertising support, contest winners like Payeng also receive mentorship from the Brock LINC to help navigate common business hurdles and gain industry knowledge.

“We are looking forward to seeing the success of a student entrepreneur selling their products to the Brock community,” says Cassie Conte, Program Manager at the Brock LINC.

More details about the 2025 contest, which takes place during the Winter Term, will be released in January.
