A Brock University researcher has ranked first on a global list of the most productive authors appearing in American Marketing Association (AMA) journals.
Professor of Marketing V. Kumar, who is also the Goodman Academic Industry Partnership Professor, published the highest number of papers — 23 in total — in the Journal of Marketing and the Journal of Marketing Research from 2014 to 2023.
The Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Marketing Research and three other AMA journals are considered to be among the top journals in the marketing field.
“I’ve been fortunate to work with brilliant doctoral students and co-authors,” says Kumar.
Kumar’s research areas include technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning; industry sectors including financial services, telecommunications, retail and hospitality; and topics such as international marketing and sales management.
He aims to develop models that help businesses solve problems by focusing on three elements in his research: rigour, relevance and impact.
Kumar says rigour involves anticipating all possible challenges and outcomes so that the planned solution to the problem is as “foolproof” as possible. The model also needs to be relevant to the business so that the key stakeholders are engaged, says Kumar.
“Do businesses, other key stakeholders, the community and society at large care about the research we’re doing?” he says. “If the answer is no, if they’re not going to benefit from this research, then there is no impact.”
Goodman School of Business Dean Barry Wright says Brock is fortunate to have Kumar as an academic-industry partnership professor to work with partners and expand the impact of research beyond academia.
“Impactful scholarship goes beyond the publishing of papers; it’s the ripple effect that occurs through knowledge dissemination, which in turn triggers industry innovation,” says Wright.
The AMA journals list is just one part of Kumar’s publishing success.
He has been ranked number one for publications in the top four marketing journals for more than a decade. Kumar also appears on the Stanford University’s list of the world’s top two per cent of scientists with the most citations.
He has published more than 300 impactful papers in leading journals over the past 30 years. Kumar has also written more than 30 books and is set to release two more in the coming months.
