Gently used clothing, household items sought for Brock students

A campaign is underway to collect gently used winter clothing and small household items for Brock students in need.

Brock International, Student Life and Success, the Friendship for Overseas College and University Students (FOCUS) club, and OPIRG-Brock have partnered to collect the items, which will support all Brock students, including incoming international students who are still settling into their new surroundings.

While past drives focused primarily on warm winter clothing, feedback received after International Student Orientation in early January highlighted further demand for basic necessities.

“With this next drive, our hope is to provide international students, or any students in need, access to items we tend to take for granted in our daily lives,” says Carolyn Villella, International Student Life Specialist, Brock International. “Things like pots, pans or eating utensils, bedding, even hangers for clothing will help simplify their day-to-day life so they can start their academic journey on the right foot.”

The following items are now being accepted at both the International Welcome Desk (on the second floor of the International Centre) and the Faith and Life Centre (in Alphie’s Trough) between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. until Friday, Feb. 2:

  • Winter jackets
  • Winter boots
  • Bedding and bed linens
  • Clothing hangers
  • Fans
  • Bakeware
  • Cookware, pots/pans
  • Cutlery/utensils
  • Small appliances (blenders/mixers)
  • Tableware
  • Office materials

Organizers ask that all items donated be either new or gently used, and clean.

Students will be able to browse and pick up items on Wednesday, Feb. 7 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Faith and Life Centre. Due to capacity limits, students must RSVP in advance through ExperienceBU.

This clothing drive and pickup event are part of International Development Week at Brock, which aims to draw attention to international development and shine a spotlight on Canadians’ contributions to eradicating poverty and to a more peaceful, inclusive and prosperous world.
