Wellness Week offers slate of student activities, resources

With end-of-term assignments and exams nearing, the Brock University Students’ Union (BUSU) and Graduate Students’ Association (GSA) are preparing a week of activities meant to help relieve stress and prepare students to overcome the pressures often encountered this time of year.

Wellness Week takes place Monday, Nov. 6 to Friday, Nov. 10, with events hosted by BUSU, GSA, the Brock University Library, Brock’s Student Wellness and Accessibility Centre (SWAC), Brock Recreation and the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs.

“The Graduate Student Association has organized a week full of health and wellness events and activities tailored for graduate students. Join us to access vital resources promoting self-care, resilience, mental health support and boosting your overall academic and personal well-being, which is a crucial part of your journey as a grad student,” says GSA President Rakha Zabin.

GSA Wellness Week events include:

  • Monday, Nov. 6 to Friday, Nov. 10 — Healthy Snacks and Treats: Brock graduate students are invited to visit the GSA office, located at MCC 302, during Wellness Week to enjoy healthy snacks and treats.
  • Monday, Nov. 6 — Meditation Session: Facilitated by yoga and meditation instructor Abbey Morris, this relaxing meditation session takes place at 10:30 a.m. in Pond Inlet. Visit ExperienceBU to RSVP.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 7 — Artistic Harmony: Drop in for a paint and playlist experience at 10 a.m. in Pond Inlet.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 8 — Sound Bath Session: Facilitated by yoga and meditation instructor Abbey Morris, this session takes place at 10:30 a.m. in Pond Inlet. Visit ExperienceBU to RSVP.
  • Thursday, Nov. 9 — Drop-in Snack Lunch: Takes place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the GSA office.
  • Friday, Nov. 10 — Screen Retreat: Drop in for succulent planting and a coffee social at 10 a.m. in Pond Inlet.
  • Friday, Nov. 10 — Yoga Session: This relaxing yoga session with Brock Recreation takes place at 1 p.m. in the the Brock Fitness Studio. Visit ExperienceBU to RSVP.

For undergraduate students, BUSU and partners across campus have planned a range of fun and relaxing activities.

“At BUSU, we pride ourselves on being able to help students year-round with engaging programming that relieves stress and combats loneliness,” says BUSU President James Maxwell-Barillas. “Wellness Week is no different, with an added focus on our students’ well-being, especially with exam season fast approaching.”

BUSU Wellness Week events include:

  • Monday, Nov. 6 — Pottery Painting in Union Station: Pottery will be provided by Crockadoodle. Visit the BUSU website to RSVP as spots are limited.
  • Monday, Nov. 6 — Wellness Fair: Students will have the opportunity to visit with local vendors and partners at Union Station while collecting free swag and wellness resources.
  • Monday, Nov. 6 and Wednesday, Nov. 8 — Library Yoga with Justine: Teaching and Learning Librarian and yoga instructor Justine Cotton will guide participants through a series of gentle poses and mindful breathing exercises. This event is hosted by Brock University Library. Visit the BUSU website to RSVP as spots are limited.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 7 and Wednesday, Nov. 8 — Free Grab and Go Breakfast: Available in Union Station from 8 to 10 a.m., while supplies last.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 7 — Therapy dogs: This pop-in event, hosted by SWAC, will take place in Pond Inlet.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 7 — Mindful Folding Origami for Beginners: This session by beginners for beginners is open to all skill levels and takes place at noon in Learning Commons Classroom B (ST 230).
  • Wednesday, Nov. 8 — BrockTV’s Render This film festival takes place at The Film House in the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre in downtown St. Catharines. Brock students can get free tickets on the BUSU website with code RENDERTHIS (includes a free snack and drink voucher at event).
  • Thursday, Nov. 9 — Free All-ages Karaoke Night at Isaac’s: Free pizza and pop provided while supplies last with more than $300 in prizes up for grabs.
  • Thursday, Nov. 9 — Free Hot Breakfast: Students can enjoy a full free hot breakfast, pastries, juice and fruit starting at 7:30 a.m. in Union Station. Breakfast is sponsored by Student VIP and will be served while supplies last.
