International students come from all over the world to learn English through Brock University’s ESL Services.
They attend English classes daily to improve their reading, writing, grammar, speaking and listening skills, but opportunities for learning extend well beyond the classroom.
To further enhance the experience for students new to Canada and meet housing demands for summer programs and beyond, Brock employees and Niagara community members are encouraged to open their doors as homestay hosts.
“This program is much more than housing,” says Nathan Cheney, Director, Professional and Continuing Studies at Brock. “The Brock homestay program is about providing international students a place to make meaningful experiences, be immersed in Canadian culture and connect with the local community.”
April-Dawn Blackwell, Brock’s Associate Vice-President of Professional and Continuing Studies, is excited to have students back on campus and in Niagara.
“We’re excited to see our ESL students learn and grow by truly experiencing life in Canada through homestay,” she says. “Students who’ve been a part of the program and the ESL team are incredibly appreciative of the welcoming and caring Brock community members who’ve shown their support.”
Homestay families are responsible for providing support with meals, accommodations, facilities and a welcoming family atmosphere.
Upon completing an application and screening process, hosts will receive up to $900 per month while providing homestay accommodations.
ESL services is encouraging all Brock University employees as well as St. Catharines and Thorold residents with available rooms to consider short- or long-term stays and welcome new international students.
