President’s Golf Classic supports scholarships for Brock student-athletes

More than 140 golfers converged on St. Catharines Golf and Country Club Monday, May 30 to help raise $60,000 for Brock University student-athletes.

The 19th annual President’s Golf Classic provided a boost for Brock University’s student-athletes through scholarships and financial support.

“This event means so much to us at Brock University, to have this level of community support. We’re grateful to have our supporters care about Brock and our student-athletes,” Interim University President Lynn Wells said at the event. “Student-athletes are some of the top ambassadors for the institution because they embody the values at the heart of Brock. They demonstrate community engagement, integrity and respect, day in and day out.”

Rankin Construction was the presenting sponsor for the fifth consecutive tournament.

Founded by former Brock President David Atkinson and the late David S. Howes to support Brock’s student-athletes, the President’s Golf Classic has raised more than $1.2 million throughout its history.

Howes felt the community needed to learn how committed student-athletes were to become successful on and off the field. He felt easing their financial considerations would dramatically help them reach their goals.

“The President’s Golf Classic provides the much-needed financial support for athletic financial awards for many of our student-athletes, who represent Brock University,” said Melissa Krist, Director, Brock Sports. “Both the academic and athletic rigour of student-athletes doesn’t leave much time for anything else, such as part-time jobs, to support their academic and athletic pursuits. It’s heartwarming to be part of a community that understands this and is united to support our Badgers so that they can, in turn, be our leaders of tomorrow.”

Other major sponsors for this year’s tournament included T.
