Webinar aims to reverse trend of anti-Muslim hate and Islamophobia

Anti-Muslim hate and Islamophobia will be at the centre of an upcoming webinar presented by Brock’s Anti-Racism Task Force.

Open to the Brock and wider Niagara community, “Reversing the Rise of Anti-Muslim Hate and Dismantling Islamophobia” will take place Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 11 a.m. via Microsoft Teams. The online event will explore the causes of this religious-based intolerance and propose strategies for mitigating this kind of racism.

The webinar will feature a 45-minute panel discussion between Leenat Jilani, Associate Lawyer at Kutty and Associates; Andre Basson, former Brock chaplain and Adjunct Professor of Medieval and Renaissance Studies; Usman Raja, Professor of Organizational Behaviour and Human Resources at Brock’s Goodman School of Business; and Samah Marei, a PhD student at the University of Toronto.

The panelists will raise awareness around the rising trend of hate crimes specifically targeting Muslims in Canada. They will also explore what survivors can do when they are attacked and what concrete steps Canadian society can take to curb this alarming extremism.

Following the discussion, there will be a 15-minute Q&A with the audience.

More information on the event is available on ExperienceBU.
