New dates announced for Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games

The Canada Games Council (CGC) and Niagara Host Society announced the new dates for the Canada Summer Games Monday, Oct. 26.

The Games have been officially rescheduled for Aug. 6 to 21, 2022 after consultation with each provincial/territorial team, National Sport Organizations, sport and non-sport venues and all levels of government.

Originally, the Games were scheduled to take place on the same dates in 2021 before they were recently postponed to the summer of 2022 due to continued public health concerns relating to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The new dates mean Niagara 2022’s Opening Ceremony will now take place on Saturday, Aug. 6, 2022 at Meridian Centre in St. Catharines, while the Games’ Closing Ceremony will fall on Sunday, Aug. 21, 2022 at Queen Victoria Park in Niagara Falls.

The CGC continues to work with sport partners to determine athlete eligibility rules for the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games. A resolution for each sport is expected to be announced by early 2021.

More than 5,000 participants and 4,000 volunteers are expected to participate in the 28th edition of the Canada Games that will be held in the Niagara region.

Canada Games Park is currently being constructed on the Brock University campus and will be home to two ice pads, a para-sport gymnasium, health and well-being facilities, high-performance training facilities and a 200-metre indoor track. Six beach volleyball courts, a 400-metre track and field facility, and an outdoor cycling and environmental sustainability centre will be located outside the building.

Brock is involved from the research, curricular and community engagement perspectives with the goal of leaving a lasting legacy for its students, faculty, staff and the wider community. For more information, visit Brock’s Canada Summer Games website at brocku.ca/canada-games
