Warning about fraudulent job ad and cheque scam

Students and other members of the Brock community should be on alert as attempts have been made to scam multiple students recently through a common cheque-cashing fraud.

The scam originates when the victim responds to a what they think is a real job ad on a reputable job posting website. They are then contacted by someone pretending to be Brock University President Gervan Fearon, who sends them what looks like a real pay cheque. The victims are instructed to deposit the cheque and send payment back in the form of Bitcoin.

This is a scam and anyone who thinks they have been contacted as part of this fraudulent activity should immediately contact Brock Campus Security at 905-688-5550 x4300.

Additionally, any victims who have sent money back as part of this scam should contact Niagara Regional Police at 905-688-4111 or visit a local police detachment.
