Sankey Lecture rescheduled after spring storm

After an ice storm put it on hold last spring, the annual Sankey Lecture in Masonic Studies is set to return next month.

The event has been rescheduled for Sunday, Sept. 9 at 3 p.m. in Sean O’Sullivan Theatre.

Hosted by the Department of History, this year’s lecture will explore the performance of ritual.  William D. Moore, an associate professor in the Department of History of Art and Architecture at Boston University, will speak on “Catechism, Spectacle, Burlesque: American Fraternal Ritual Performance, 1733-1933.”

Moore researches Masonic temples and ritual architecture and interrogates the interrelationship between built form and systems of belief.

The annual event, a partnership between the Grand Lodge and Brock University, draws people from across Ontario and New York.

The event honours the work of Charles Sankey, a Freemason and Masonic scholar and the University’s Chancellor from 1969 to 1974. Brock holds a special collection on Masonic history, donated from Sankey’s personal library.

The Sankey Lecture is usually held each spring but was this year rescheduled due to inclement weather in April.

The event is free, but tickets should be reserved online in advance.
