Brock launches region-wide scholarship program

In an effort to help keep more of Niagara’s top students in the region, Brock University has announced a plan to hand out more than 50 annual scholarships to graduating high school students.

The Niagara Principal’s Scholarship, one of two initiatives announced by Brock President Jack Lightstone in a presentation to Regional Council Thursday night, will recognize two students from each of Niagara’s secondary schools who best demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and an exceptional commitment to school and community.

The new entrance awards continue Brock’s strategic mandate of youth retention and workforce development in the Niagara Region.

“It is our hope the Niagara Principal’s Scholarship will encourage and support local students to pursue their post-secondary education in Niagara; to continue to develop their leadership potential while at Brock and in the community, and to become the next generation of leaders in Niagara,” said Kim Meade, Brock University’s Vice-Provost and Associate Vice President.

Secondary school principals in Niagara may select up to two candidates from their school to be recipients of the award based on both academic achievement and the students’ citizenship contributions to their community. The students will each receive $2,500 entrance scholarships.

The second initiative announced Thursday night will make post-secondary education accessible for young Niagara residents supported by social assistance. The program will allow eligible students to take specific courses part time at Brock, while continuing to receive support through the Ontario Works program.

Tuition will be waved by the University, and students will be considered for programs to help with books, transportation and other related costs of attending university. The program will focus on youth identified through the Niagara Region Bursary Program and by Ontario Works caseworkers.
