Five Questions with… Goodman DECA President Nick Hollard

Nick Hollard, President of Goodman DECA, gets some support from teammates after a successful DECA Provincials.

1. Congratulations on your recent success at the DECA Provincials! Tell us about the weekend and how you ended up finishing with such great results.

Well, I’ll first say that the DECA U Ontario Board of Directors did an amazing job putting everything together for the weekend. It was absolutely awesome; everything ran smoothly and everyone had a blast.

The team really came together this weekend, too. Something that I feel was greatly improved upon since previous years was the cohesiveness of our delegation. We were always hanging out together, having a laugh, being supportive, cheering on our school, and so forth. It truly felt like a fifty-one person unit, and I’m so proud to have been an integral part of that experience. I’ve received nothing but positive feedback from my delegates, and we have a lot of interest already for executive positions and returning delegates!

As for our results, I’m really proud of what my delegation has done this year. We tripled our medals since last Provincials – our six medalists were Yvonne Huynh and Zaman Dubey (1st place – Project Management), Robert Mandru and Steven Simons (3rd place – International Marketing Role Play), Ashwin Anant (3rd place – Financial Services Written Testing), and Nick Hollard (1st place – Travel Management Role Play).

It’s important to note, however, that these awards aren’t the be-all and end-all of our success. It’s a tight competition, and I know, without a doubt, that we had many other delegates in those 4th-10th spots in many categories. I’ve seen the score sheets, and we had delegates scoring 90 to 95 (out of 100) without making the podium. So not only did our overall medal results improve, but we’ve seen an overall improvement in our entire chapter.

Look for bigger and better things in 2017 – I’m confident that the next executive team will do some big things, as well.

2. As President of Goodman DECA, you’ve overseen the hard work that your team has put in to be ready for Provincials. Talk about the preparation that went into this year’s DECA U event.

For Goodman DECA, this has been a year defined by change. Our chapter has been around for well over a decade now, and a lot of the systems and processes we followed were pretty antiquated. While other chapters around the province had become innovative and creative in their tenure, we had stagnated, and I decided that this would be the year that Goodman DECA received a face-lift. The two key pieces that we implemented were our training process and our internal competition. My VPs of Training created new training materials to not only teach students how to present through practice cases, but we also implemented mandatory learning sessions that would teach students what to present. We had listened to feedback from previous delegates and a lack of knowledge was identified as a major weakness.

This worked out to around four hours of training per week leading up to the Internal Competition on November 1st – more training than we’ve ever had before that date! As many of our delegates are first-time case competitors, the Internal Competition was a great way for us to simulate Provincials and mentally prepare students for the event while providing a competitive edge that really brought out everyone’s A-game. I’m confident that these two new items were vital in our success this year as a chapter!

3. Who has been your most influential Professor or Mentor at Goodman?

Dr. Mark Julien is 100% the professor that has influenced me most in my time here. I have been a student of his for two OBHR courses, and I’ve had a blast both times. But it extends beyond fun, of course. Superficially, the content that I learned in his classroom has been the most applicable and tangible material I’ve been taught. I have applied knowledge I accrued in his classroom numerous times in my position as President of Goodman DECA. On a deeper level, I have never seen anyone love what he does as much as Dr. Julien. The energy, passion and genuine excitement he brings to the classroom brings the content to life. To me, it’s a reflection of finding something you truly love and putting yourself into it whole-heartedly. It’s that spirit that I wish to offer to others as a student leader to enrich the students’ experiences and inspire them to follow their passions, as well.

4. What advice do you have for younger Goodman students who are looking to get involved?

There are over seventy volunteer positions open on CareerZone right now. Go apply!

The BSA and its clubs have a lot to offer – something for everyone, really. And everyone starts somewhere!

Today, you’re a club executive, but tomorrow, you could be the President of the BSA. It’s all up to you to put yourself out there.

5. You’ll be starting your 4th year of your BBA in September. Where do you see yourself heading after that?

Well, as a BBA Co-Op, my program is 4.5 years, but I’m doing an extra semester as well to stay involved. I think that the experiences and connections we have the opportunity to create within the Goodman BSA are incredibly invaluable, and I don’t mind delaying my graduation for it.

Whenever I do get around to graduating, however, I’m hoping to find work in financial services, and I intend to do my Master’s a few years down the road as well!

Five Questions with… Student Ambassador Association VP Olivia Poulin

Olivia Poulin is the VP of Ambassadors for the Goodman Student Ambassador Association, and the Owner of Olivia's Pupadise.

1.       You’re the VP of Ambassadors for the Goodman Student Ambassador Association (SAA). What are your duties in this role?

My job as the Vice President of Ambassadors for the Goodman SAA is to connect students with our community. I work with ambassadors to reach out to high school students and teach them about opportunities at Goodman; with the St. Catharines Business Club to foster a professional relationship with Brock; and in various other community events – such as JumpStart programs and volunteer events.

This year I’m revamping the Ambassador Program. Rather than going out to do presentations at high schools (which are done by Recruitment and Liaison offices at Brock), we will be hosting a panel called “Real Talk”. This is a chance for high school students to ask their non-specific university life questions about lectures, friends, downtime, classes, professors, schedules, workloads, networking, getting involved etc. in a casual setting.

Students often turn to someone they know that is in university to ask these questions – we want to provide it all in one place with a clean format that offers lots of varying viewpoints to help students form their own conclusions.

2.       What made you decide to come to the Goodman School of Business?

Firstly, if we’re being completely honest – financial aid. I worked hard enough to earn many scholarships that would cover the cost of my tuition and I could still live at home in Niagara Falls. However, now that I’m here I can’t imagine choosing anything else.

The community at the GSB is unlike anything else – the competitions and events foster such a positive team and work environment, the professors are knowledgeable and helpful, the work load and assignments are challenging yet (mostly) practical… on top of that, the GSB is accredited and offers concentrations in various areas of business.

As an entrepreneur myself, BioLinc was also a program that I knew wanted to get involved with. And finally, when the business program here was transformed into the Goodman School of Business I knew it would grow into a successful and reputable program, and I wanted to be part of that!

3.       Congratulations on having your business, Olivia’s Pupadise, featured in the Niagara Falls Review Biz Beat column! Tell us how you got the idea to start Olivia’s Pupadise.

Thank you! It was very exciting for me to be on the front page of the paper and it was great advertising for my business too. I got so many inquiries and actually had to hire to keep up with demand!

It mostly started as favours for friends – watching their pets while they were away and staying in their homes to do it. Eventually I realized there was a market for this kind of care – where pets could stay in their own home, stick to their routines and homes would also be taken care of. Not every animal can go to a kennel – small animals, animals with medical conditions, animals with separation anxiety, animals that don’t like other animals, etc. need a different kind of care – care that Olivia’s Pupadise provides.

I launched with the help of the Ontario Summer Company Program in Niagara Falls where I had help from mentors to solidify my business plan and make tweaks along the way. Since I started in June of 2015 I have had over 30 clients and approximately 60 animals. I love my job more than anything!

4.       What’s the best part about owning your own business?

In terms of happiness factor – getting to love and care for animals of course. Animals are my passion – and I have a sweet spot for dogs and cats. Not many others can say they get paid to cuddle with dogs/cats, walk them, and spend time with them!

Aside from that, I think running my own business is the ultimate culmination of the things I’m learning at school. A degree is great, but what I really need is practical work experience and real life situations to apply the things that I’m learning. There is so much work that goes on behind the scenes that I would have never learned to do for myself had I not started Olivia’s Pupadise.

On top of that, it helps me with time management and helps me distinguish myself from other students in my program. Getting to make decisions about services, marketing, client relationships, pricing, administrative details etc. is amazing because everything I do has a direct impact on my business and I can see what works and what doesn’t.

5.       What advice do you have for other Goodman students thinking about starting their own business?

DO IT.

Yes I know it’s scary and you might doubt yourself at first… but you have so little to lose right now! At least TRY and even if it fails entirely you’ll at least walk away with some knowledge and experience. It will teach you so much and change the way you view yourself and your immediate environment.

I think every student should be involved in some sort of entrepreneurial venture (whether they own a business, help a friend with one, or learn the nitty gritty of a local small business) because it helps you apply all of the skills you’re learning in class and sets you apart from all the others in your program.

Everything worth doing is hard. There are so many resources and people that will help you and support you along the way – you just have to take the first step and start working towards it today!

Five Questions with… ASA VP of Marketing Sean Pereira

Sean Pereira Brock's Luckiest Student

Sean Pereira is the VP of Marketing for the Goodman Accounting Students' Association and recently won Brock's Luckiest Student

Congratulations on winning Brock’s Luckiest Student! Tell us what that day was like and how you felt after winning.

I was so surprised when I found out. I was initially supposed to be meeting Chris Ventura to discuss some marketing strategies for the upcoming Brock University Accounting Conference. When Chris told me that we would be speaking to Chris Green from the BUSU office, I was a little confused but I went along with it.

When I opened the door to the room, I was so shocked and had no idea what was going on for the first few seconds. It was such a great feeling to win but having it be a surprise was much more amazing. I was also really thankful to have all of my friends there to be a part of the surprise. I couldn’t stop smiling throughout the entire day and am really grateful. It was definitely a highlight of my experience at Brock University that I will never forget!

As the VP of Marketing for the Goodman Accounting Students Association, what does your role entail? What duties and responsibilities do you have?

Acting as the VP of Marketing for the Goodman Accounting Students’ Association (ASA) has been such a memorable and amazing experience. Within my role I implemented and maintained our new site (goodmanasa.com), in addition I handle all of the social media outlets for the ASA (@goodmanASA). If you ever see a Tweet, Instagram, or Facebook post from one of our accounts, it is most likely me!

It has been a great opportunity to develop my online skills while staying engaged in my undergrad. The ASA has held many great events that I had the opportunity to attend/promote, some of which include: Learn to Golf, Goodman Consulting Competition, Break the Case etc. My term with the ASA as the VP of Marketing is coming to an end and I have gained so much knowledge from this role as well as created some lasting memories and relationships that I am sure will continue to progress throughout my time at the Goodman School of Business.

In addition, the Goodman Accounting Students’ Association is currently hiring a new president! If you are interested the deadline for applications is January 15, 2015 – apply via CareerZone Job ID: 35422.

You’re also on the committee for the Brock University Accounting Conference (BUAC) that happened recently – how did that go?

Being part of the Brock University Accounting Conference has been by far one of the best decisions I have made in my time as an Undergrad. The executive roles within BUAC are so great because everything is very fast-paced and you become really close with your team in such a short period of time. At the end of my term, attending the conference is a great way to see how all of the BUAC team’s handwork over the past months have paid off.

This year I took on the role of Director of Communications for BUAC 2015. My role was amazing as I got to interact with schools across Canada via social media. If you would like to learn more about the Brock University Accounting Conference check out our website (goodmanBUAC.com)! I am so happy with how the conference ran and I will be taking away some great memories that I will cherish. I would like to wish my team the best of luck in the future and I am so glad I got to work with all of you amazing people! #BUAC2015 #BUACLOVE

Who has been your strongest mentor at the Goodman School of Business?

This question took me some time to come up with an answer, but ultimately, there are way too many people to list. Throughout my short time at the Goodman School of Business, I have made so many amazing connections and met so many new people. All of these people have made some sort of impact on my life and I have learned so much from them. I would ultimately like to thank all of the amazing student leaders who are so active within the Brock Community and have been able to influence me to become more engaged.

What are your plans for your winter break?

After my last exam on the 19th, I will be heading back home to Markham. While at home I will be spending some time studying and preparing for JDC Central 2016. This will be my first time competing at JDCC and I will be representing Goodman as a part of the Finance team. I can’t wait to participate in the competition and show off my #GoodmanSpirit!

On the 23rd, my family and I will be driving to Florida for the holidays and then boarding a cruise to Mexico. I am really excited because this will be my first time visiting Mexico and I can’t wait to experience the great culture and amazing activities it has to offer! I love to travel (part of the reason I aspire to obtain my CPA designation) and this will be a nice relief after the stress of exams.

Six ways the Goodman Career Development Office can help you

Posted by: Neal Sengupta

If you’re in St. Catharines this summer, you have an excellent opportunity to make use of the amazing complimentary services that the Goodman Career team offer! With fewer students on-campus, it’s an excellent way to add clarity to your post-Goodman life!

Let’s take a look at the top six value-added services a Career Consultant can provide for you…

6. Assistance with Getting Involved

Everyone from recruiters to fellow students probably tell you about the benefits of getting involved. There are many ways to get involved at Goodman such as joining the executive team of a club or participating in a case competition. The Goodman Career team can provide information and connect you with key individuals who can help jumpstart your involvement.

5. Career Advising

No matter whether you are a BBA, BAcc, MBA, or MAcc student, the Goodman Career team is well-informed on industry trends for all business concentrations and majors. Would you like to know about the job prospects for a degree focusing in Operations Management? Having trouble deciding between public or corporate accounting? The Goodman Career team can offer valuable input to you!

4. Cover Letter/Resume Assistance

Let’s face it – we could all use a cover letter and resume tune-up! Meeting with Goodman Career is a great way to get good feedback and improve your application documents.

3. LinkedIn Advice

Do you have a LinkedIn? Great! Do you have a polished LinkedIn profile that you would be proud to show a recruiter? Not really? No worries! Goodman Career can help you perfect your online presence! They can also show you how to use LinkedIn to connect with industry professionals (like how to customize your invite request) and for career research.

2. Interview Preparation

You visited Marisa or Ashley and they helped you get involved, advised you on your career plan, spruced up your application documents and helped you with your LinkedIn profile. And because of this, you have an interview – congratulations! To ace the interview, you should book an interview prep appointment or mock interview with Goodman Career who can give you information on types of interviews, types of interview questions, how to prepare, what to expect and appropriate follow-up methods.

1. Information Interviews

Informational interviews work in reverse to traditional interviews; students meet with industry professionals and ask them about their career progressions and industry trends for a particular career amongst other things. Information interviews, however, are not an opportunity for you to sell yourself as a candidate. The Goodman Career team can guide you on the intricacies of conducting successful information interviews – they may also be able to connect you with Goodman alumni!

BBA student Meet Shah, who aspires to pursue a career in banking, has already been successful in utilizing Goodman Career’s services. Meet has been able to liaise with key individuals who are already successfully doing what he wants to do. “[Using Goodman Career’s services] gave me first-hand experience on what to expect in the [banking] field as well as develop relationships that will be useful in the future.” Only entering his third year of studies, Meet has met with notable representatives from LinkedIn, Hydro One, TD and BMO.

Convinced? There are two main ways to communicate with the Goodman Career team:

  • Make an appointment!
Sign on to CareerZone, go to the Goodman Career tab, select “Appointments”, and search for an available time slot by selecting the service you are interested in.
  • Quick question? Send it via the Goodman Portal!
Start the conversation at the Goodman Portal – click “Contact Academic Advising & Goodman Career” at the top of the page, select the Adviser Group (Goodman Career), choose the category of information you require, and type in all your details!

Neal is a Goodman Social Media Ambassador and is in his final year of the BAcc program at the Goodman School of Business.

Top Five Things to do in Niagara

Posted by: Melissa Trapani

Bored of the same routine? Want to spice things up in your relationship? Just want something different to do? It is hard when you are new to a city, unaware of what is in the area, and confused about where to go, but here are the top 5 things I would recommend to do in Niagara.

1. Port Dalhousie

Sunset at Port Dalhousie

Sunset at Port Dalhousie. Photo by Joe Ross.

Bring the kid out in you with a trip to Port Dalhousie where you can and go on the $0.05/ride carousel. This historic landmark has been around since 1921 and the price has not increased since. If you would rather go for a casual walk, Port has a pier that you can walk down and sit on the rocks to either watch the sunset or just catch up with some friends. If this doesn’t excite you, go to the opposite side of Port and walk the second pier, where your final destination is a lighthouse.

2. Decew Falls

Brock University has many trails behind the campus where the public can explore nature and view the beautiful waterfall just behind Thistle. This trail is a great way to relieve stress and take a deep breath of fresh air if you’re having a bad day or getting nervous for exams. Take your friends or go alone! Please be safe though, as the hike can be very steep at points and you wouldn’t want an accident to happen throughout your adventure.

3. A trip to Niagara Falls (Clifton Hill)

Niagara Falls is a great way to spend the entire day. Bring your friends out to some of the best known attractions in all of Niagara! From haunted houses to fun houses, mirror mazes to the Ferris wheel, there is something for everyone – young and not-so-young. While you’re there, at the bottom of the hill you will find the amazing Niagara Falls. A trip on Hornblower Niagara Cruises takes you right into the bay of Niagara Falls.

4. Niagara Gorge

Located at 3050 Niagara Parkway, you will find free parking and a trail that gets you close and personal to white water rapids. Be sure to bring your camera as this free trail holds many picture-perfect areas that you do not want to miss. It is recommended that you don’t leave this to the end of the day though, since it’s very easy to get lost! Avoid hiking after 8 p.m. so that you can see where you’re going.

5. A trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake

Feel like shopping, going to wineries, or grabbing some of the finest local foods in Niagara? Niagara-on-the-Lake is the place you want to be! Queen Street holds many historic landmarks that many people enjoy reading up on and viewing. This street also holds many boutiques, restaurants, and live performances at the Shaw Festival. A short walk away is also Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours which is a thrilling ride for all ages. This attraction offers university and college students a discount rate, so be sure to tell them you go to Brock!

Hopefully this all helps you out this summer and gave you an extra boost to explore Niagara throughout your time here!

Melissa is a Goodman Social Media Ambassador and is in her third year of the BBA program at the Goodman School of Business.
