Go Global with Goodman!

Though we are well into the winter term of 2017, one can’t help but look back at the New Years resolutions we may or may not have stuck to. How is the “new you” doing? Sticking to that diet? Hitting the gym as often as you’d like? No worries! After all there is always next year.

However, if you decided you wanted to travel more this year, look no further. The Goodman School of Business has partnered with multiple business school around the globe to give students the opportunity to experience a new country and earn credits towards their degree at the same time.

Want to study abroad? Here’s what you need to know about a Goodman Exchange:

You have a large selection of schools to choose from and the academic advisors as well as the International Exchange Assistant will make sure you meet all the requirements. With options in the UK, Spain, France, Italy, Mexico, Germany, Poland, Australia, Brazil, China, and many more. (Click here for a map of all the places you can go!)

All the courses are taught in English. Although you might want to learn your chosen countries language and about the culture before you go.

You pay the same tuition as you do at Brock. Since Brock has established partnerships, you don’t have to worry about international student fees but will still have to pay for your living expenses. Every country differs in cost so do your research!

Apply in your second year! This means you will travel in your third year. However, if you apply in your third year, you will travel in fourth year. If there are any conflicts, it could affect when you graduate.

Every student that has gone on an exchange has returned to Brock with memories, rewarding experience, and a few credits going towards their degree. Overall they found it amazing and would do again if they could.

Apply for your own Goodman Exchange

Travel Tuesday: University of Gothenburg

The Goodman Exchange Program offers a variety of countries and schools to choose from, but this week we will take a deeper look into our partner school, the University of Gothenburg School of Economics, Business & Law.

Why Gothenburg?

Currently, more than 60,000 students are studying in Göteborg – Sweden’s most popular University and the largest in the Nordic area. It is fantastically located on the west coast of the country with exciting cultural and entertainment scenes. Göteborg has developed from being solely an international trade and industry city to an intensive “City of Enterprise”.

Aside from the amazing travel experiences, there are scholarships available for students going to Gothenburg in the winter term! Scholarships are a wonderful opportunity and look great on a resume.

Why Sweden?

Additionally, there’s a good chance of finding an interesting job in the Gothenburg region after your studies. Several of Sweden’s major well-known companies have their origins and headquarters in the city including companies like Volvo and SKF. There are several organizations available to students that work within the community to aid students in finding a career after their studies. This is great for those students looking for a summer job and wishing to gain some international experience beyond the classroom.

Above all, Sweden is a wonderful and friendly country with much to do and see.  Visitthe Survival Guide – Living in Sweden for more information on what its really like to live in Gothenburg. There are still spots available this year so pass on this article to a friend and apply today!

Goodman International Exchange can open many doors for students in terms of a future career, further education, and personal experience. Don’t believe me? Visit the Goodman Exchange website and learn more about the Goodman International Exchange Program. It’s worth it!

For any questions regarding exchange please visit us during walk in hours from 2 – 4 p.m. in Taro Hall 368. Apply today and start packing!

Turn Distress into De-Stress This Exam Season

Whew, midterm exams are over! Time to relax, binge watch your favourite T.V. show, and slee- Oh wait, finals are just around the corner. We are less than a month away from our final exams and some of us may find this to be a pretty stressful period. To combat our worries, here are a few ways you can have a stress-free exam season:

Attend Brock’s Night Against Procrastination

You can start de-stressing tonight (Thursday, Nov. 16, 2016)! From 6 p.m. to 12 midnight, you can pop in and out of the Guernsey Market and take advantage of the various resources like workstations with professional support, A-Z Learning Service workshops, relaxation sessions, and more.

RSVP here!

Download the I.M. Well App

Your mental health is important, and Brock University knows it. This free app was designed to help Brock and other Ontario university/college students get the mental health resources they need. The app offers a 24-hour live chat so you can get confidential and personal assistance whenever you want.

Exercise

Take out your anger while doing cardio or find your peace while practicing yoga. Brock offers plenty of fitness classes including a De-Stress Stretch class (Tuesdays 4:10-4:50 and Thursdays 12:10-12:50)! Download the Brock Sports app to get the full fitness class schedule.

Treat Yourself

Nothing puts you in a better mood than treating yourself to something you really like. Eat some of your favourite chocolate, buy yourself a little gift, have a long bubble bath, or go out with your friends! Whatever it may be, it will give you the energy and optimism you need to get back to studying.

Colour Away

(source: flickr.com)

Adult colouring books have become one of the biggest trends in the book industry, making millions of dollars. Colouring can help reduce stress and anxiety, so take some time to be a kid again and colour within or outside of the lines.

The Eight Hour Rule

This is something I learned from my Brock orientation. Follow the Eight Hour Rule to have a balance of work, play, and sleep. There are 24 hours in a day, divide that by three and you will have eight hours for work, eight hours to relax, and eight hours dedicated for sleep! I know, this is easier said than done. But if this rule seems like a reasonable fit for your lifestyle, try implementing it in your schedule.

In the end, remember that everything is going to be fine! Stressing won’t make you understand your material better or give you more hours in a day. Just take a deep breath and be confident that you will rock your exams. Good luck!

Travel Tuesday: Kozminski University

This week, we will take a look at our partner school Kozminski University, located in Warsaw, Poland.

Why go to Kozminski?

Kozminski University is one of the top universities in Europe and is accredited by AACSB, EQUIS, and AMBA.  Since 2009, Kozminski has been classified in the prestigious rankings provided by The Financial Times Business School Rankings and holds first place throughout private universities in educational rankings for the past 16 consecutive years. Kozminski also received a special distinction from the National Accreditation Committee in regards to management, administration, and law programs.

Students wishing to go to Kozminski University also have the opportunity to go on a scholarship. The scholarship includes return airfare to Warsaw and 750 Euros per month (approx. $1100 CAD per month), which will cover accommodation and most living expenses for students. This leaves plenty of room for students to travel and spend their money on other opportunities. Study programs at Kozminski are also conducted with employers like Citibank and KGHM, which naturally offer great networking possibilities.

Why Poland?

Poland is located in Eastern Europe on the Baltic Sea, and it neighbours countries such as Germany and Czech Republic. It is famous for its medieval architecture, culture, and history. Students will be studying in Warsaw (the capital of Poland), which will provide more comfort to students who have limited knowledge of the Polish language, as there are more English speakers and more English translation available. The local currency is the Polish zloty ($100 CAD is approximately 300 zloty) but some establishments accept euros.

Studying in Poland on a scholarship can allow students to travel a lot more to many different places like Prague, Budapest, Berlin, and London – all on a budget! There are affordable airlines and transportation available that make this the perfect opportunity for those wishing to travel. There are also plenty of historical sites, cities, and cuisine to experience in Poland alone.

Visit the Goodman International Exchange Office today at TA368 during walk-in hours Mondays – Thursday, 2 -4 p.m. for more information on how to apply. Go now!

Don’t be shy – Talk to your Professor!

At Brock, we are very fortunate to have a dedicated university staff of academic professionals. Many of these professors have taught across the globe and have years of expertise and recognition… which is why it can be a little bit intimidating to seek their help!

Have no fear though because, believe it or not, your professors were once students too! After visiting with a few of my current and former professors, its clear they would much rather have you seek help than fail their class.

Visit your professor

Most (if not all) professors have office hours where they spend time in their office researching and marking, but they also set aside this time for any of their students’ concerns.

Source: flickr.com

If you aren’t available at these times, you can contact your professor and book an appointment.

And if you do book an appointment, show up on time. It shows commitment to the class and respect to your professor.

Adopt a Proper Attitude

Professors can provide their expertise and insight on topics that may interest you in the future so it helps to have healthy communication with them.

How you speak to your professor matters. Address them how they prefer whether it is their teaching title or simply their first name. In this case, “Dude” is probably not acceptable.

Getting angry or acting hostile will not fix anything. And before you go to blame the professor, this might be a “YOU” problem and change is needed on your behalf.

Source: brocku.ca

If your professor doesn’t have the resources to help you, they haven’t given up on you. Often, professors can give you options to succeed. This includes recommending one of their previous students or services of Brock’s Learning Services which offers…

If you are willing to put in the effort, your professor is willing to help.

The Goodman Business Students’ Association exists to make students’ time at Goodman as meaningful and fulfilling as possible. Part of that means offering services that can help students succeed, not only in academics, but also in their career search.

  • 50 FREE business cards
  • FREE professional head shot photography
  • DISCOUNTED dry cleaning service

Business Cards

(goodmanbsa.com)

Professional Headshot Photo

(wikimedia.org)

Your personal photo is arguably the most important aspect of your LinkedIn profile. It should be high-quality, your face should take up most of the frame, and you should be well-dressed for your field. Selfies or pictures from a social gathering are not the way to go.

If you need help getting a suitable photo taken, the BSA is here to help. All you have to do is put on your best business attire, smile, and the BSA will do the rest.

The BSA will be offering professional headshots photography at the 2nd Annual  BSA Fashion Show – Nov.12th at 6:30 P.M. in the ScotiaBank Atrium (Purchase your tickets now).

If you can’t make this event, the BSA will be hosting a professional headshot session on Thursday, Nov. 24 from 3  – 5 P.M. in Carins Complex (No registration required).  Please email [email protected] for more information.

Drying Cleaning Service

(wikimedia.org)

When’s the last time that you got your business attire dry cleaned?

If it’s been a while and you don’t have much free time, then the BSA (in partnership with Modern Cleaners) is here to help. Drop your clothes off in TA 404 every Tuesday and Thursday from 12 – 3 p.m. and pick them up from 3 – 4 p.m.  Every student gets 10% off! For more information, please email [email protected].

If you have any questions about the BSA or getting involved with other Goodman Clubs, the BSA Office is open Monday-Thursday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Don’t forget to follow the BSA on FacebookTwitterInstagram and LinkedIn to stay up-to-date with all their services and events.

Travel Tuesday: SolBridge International School of Business

Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motors, LG Chem, and Kia Motors are all examples of companies that have made South Korea the business powerhouse it is today. The Goodman Exchange Office offers an incredible exchange program at SolBridge International School of Business.

This week we will take a deeper look at our newest partner institution.

SolBridge International School of Business

Solbridge International School of Business campus (solbridge.ac.kr/)

SolBridge is affiliated with Woosong University, and is located in Daejeon, South Korea – a city at the junction of Korea’s expressway and railway systems and the location of Korea’s Silicon Valley commonly known as Daedeok Innopolis. This area has largely been responsible for the explosive growth of venture businesses and has positioned Korea as a technological leader. SolBridge has collaborated with many industry leaders to provide opportunities for student internships and other networking opportunities.

Bridge into Daedook Innopolis (innopolis.or.kr)

Students who choose to attend SolBridge for their exchange will experience classes at an institution that is designed to train top business leaders. The analytical and practical skills that students acquire while attending SolBridge will give them a wider marketability in the job market. The beauty of the city is that it provides a comfortable and convenient environment for students who arrive with a limited ability to understand the Korean language.

Why South Korea?

A traditional South Korean street market (flickr.com)

Living in South Korea for a semester or a year will give students the ability to travel the beautiful Asian continent at an affordable cost – an experience that would cost thousands in Canada! Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Taipei are all just a few hours away by air. Check out “10 Reasons Why You Should Go To South Korea” and you will be convinced!

Don’t waste this amazing opportunity in front of you! Contact the Goodman Exchange Office for more information and start applying now. An experience of a lifetime is just an application away!
