At Brock, we are very fortunate to have a dedicated university staff of academic professionals. Many of these professors have taught across the globe and have years of expertise and recognition… which is why it can be a little bit intimidating to seek their help!
Have no fear though because, believe it or not, your professors were once students too! After visiting with a few of my current and former professors, its clear they would much rather have you seek help than fail their class.
Visit your professor
Most (if not all) professors have office hours where they spend time in their office researching and marking, but they also set aside this time for any of their students’ concerns.
If you aren’t available at these times, you can contact your professor and book an appointment.
And if you do book an appointment, show up on time. It shows commitment to the class and respect to your professor.
Adopt a Proper Attitude
Professors can provide their expertise and insight on topics that may interest you in the future so it helps to have healthy communication with them.
How you speak to your professor matters. Address them how they prefer whether it is their teaching title or simply their first name. In this case, “Dude” is probably not acceptable.
Getting angry or acting hostile will not fix anything. And before you go to blame the professor, this might be a “YOU” problem and change is needed on your behalf.
If your professor doesn’t have the resources to help you, they haven’t given up on you. Often, professors can give you options to succeed. This includes recommending one of their previous students or services of Brock’s Learning Services which offers…
If you are willing to put in the effort, your professor is willing to help.
