Association for Institutional Research
The Association for Institutional Research (AIR) is the world’s largest association of higher education professionals working in institutional research, assessment, planning, and related post secondary education fields. The organization provides educational resources, best practices, and professional development opportunities for more than 4,000 members. Its primary purpose is to support members in the process of collecting, analyzing, and converting data into information that supports decision-making in higher education.
Refers to whether a faculty member is tenured, tenure-track, or contractually limited.
Academic Review Committee
The Academic Review Committee (ARC) is responsible for the coordination, monitoring and implementation of all aspects of the Senate-approved Internal Quality Assurance Process (IQAP), and as such is directly accountable and responsible to Senate.
The Committee is responsible for ensuring that cyclical academic reviews, new program proposals, major modifications to existing programs and program discontinuations follow the IQAP protocols

Basic Income Units (BIUs) were funding units defined by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development (MAESD) previous to the 2017 Academic Year. Each student reported to the government for funding purposes generated a specified number of funding units (BUIs) depending on the program of registration and the level of study. WGUs are replaced BIUs during the 2017 Academic Year.

Canadian Graduate and Professional Student Survey.
The Canadian Graduate and Professional Survey (CGPSS) was undertaken in 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016. This survey contains a wealth of information about graduate student satisfaction and experience.
More than 38,000 graduate students participated at over 48 universities across Canada. The survey originated from joint US/Canadian efforts to survey graduate students.
Refers to the ranking assigned by the applicant to the program being applied to.
Canadian Institutional Research and Planning Association.
The Canadian Institutional Research and Planning Association (CIRPA) is a national association designed to promote and advance the study and practice of institutional research and planning across Canada. It has approximately 230 members from across the country working in post-secondary education, government and industry.
A group of students beginning their studies at Brock University in the same year. Each cohort is monitored for seven years.
Council of Ontario Universities.
The Council of Ontario Universities is the voice of Ontario’s universities, promoting the value of education, research and innovation that leads to social, cultural and economic success.
Determines whether a student is classified as full-time or part-time.
Council on University Planning and Analysis.
CUPA is an affiliate of COU and is composed of the Institutional Research/Analysis and Planning staff of each university which is a member of COU.
Canadian University Survey Consortium.
CUSC is Canada’s longest standing and foremost provider of undergraduate student satisfaction and experience surveys. Since CUSC’s inception in 1994, universities across Canada have jointly implemented surveys of their undergraduate students to be able to better understand and serve their students. The surveys run once a year in the Winter term and operates on a three-year cycle, alternating between first year students, middle year students, and graduating students.

Refers to an academic faculty (e.g. Applied Health Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities). Teaching/research faculty are referred to as ‘faculty members’.
Full Course Equivalent. For example, the FCE for a half course is 0.5.
Funded Full-Time Equivalent (see FTE definition)
Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act; provides a right of access to records held by the public bodies and regulates how public bodies manage personal information.
Full-Time Equivalent. A count of the number of ‘full-time equivalent’ students. Each full-time student is considered to have a full course of 5 credits per year.

The receiving or conferring of an academic degree or diploma.

A count of the total number of enrolled students.

Students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents are classified as ‘Domestic’. All other students are classified as ‘VISA’ or International.

Key Performance Indicators.
Including graduation rate, employment rate, and OSAP default rate; Brock is required to publicly report these metrics.

Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities. Formerly the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development (MAESD). Responsible for administration of laws relating to post-secondary education and skills training.

National Survey of Student Engagement.
The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) collects information from first year and final year students about the characteristics and quality of their undergraduate experience. Since the inception of the survey, more than 1,500 bachelor’s-granting colleges and universities in the United States and Canada have used it to measure the extent to which students engage in effective educational practices that are empirically linked with learning, personal development, and other desired outcomes such as persistence, satisfaction, and graduation.

Ontario Student Assistance Program. OSAP is run by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development and is funded by the federal and provincial governments.
Ontario University Application Centre. Processes applications for admission to undergraduate, law, medical, rehabilitation sciences and teacher education programs at Ontario’s universities.
Ontario University Graduate Survey.
This survey is conducted annually by MAESD. The survey is released to alumni who graduated two years previous to collect data on graduate employment outcomes.

Strategic Mandate Agreement. Each of the 45 publicly funded colleges and universities in Ontario has an agreement highlighting institutional priorities.

Weighted Grant Unit
A weighted funding unit created for the new funding model which replaces the BIU from 2017-2018 onwards.
Student Status Terms
The form or process of applying for admission to a program.
Follows the process of reviewing an application, and determining if the applicant possesses the admission requirements to be admitted into a program; furthermore being offered the program.
Process of enrolling in courses, with payment of a non-refundable registration deposit. Occurs once applicant is granted admission and confirms offer.
Applicant accepts and confirms offer to program.
