Pan Am torch relay stops at Brock campus at noon Saturday

to2015_pachiOn Saturday June 20 the Brock community is invited to join the welcome party as the 2015 Pan American Games Torch Relay reaches the University on its six-week journey from Mexico to the opening ceremonies July 10 in Toronto.

Brock University Students’ Union president Kyle Rose will be one of the torchbearers as the entourage is to arrive at noon at the General Brock sculpture in front of Schmon Tower. It will pause at Brock for 15 minutes of photos and welcoming comments, before continuing on to a celebration in downtown St. Catharines.

Anyone wanting to see or photograph the Brock University stop is advised to arrive on campus by 11:45 am.

After starting its journey May 26 at the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan, Mexico – the largest ancient pyramid in the Americas – the torch will have visited 130 communities around Ontario before arriving in Toronto to light the Pan Am Games flame on July 10.

The 2015 games will see more than 7,000 athletes from the Americas and the Caribbean competing in 36 sports for the Pan Am games on July 10-16, as well as 15 sports in the Para-Pan Games being held Aug. 7-15.

In Niagara, more more than 450 athletes, coaches and trainers will participate in the Pan Am rowing competition being held on Martindale Pond in St. Catharines, and the flatwater canoe and kayak events staged in Welland.
