Sociology speaker series lecture Sept. 18

The Department of Sociology at Brock will present the next talk in its ongoing speaker series on Wednesday, Sept. 18.

Vanessa Farr, a specialist in conflict and gender who holds a PhD from the School of Women’s Studies at York University, will present a talk, entitled “Re-awakening a Feminist-Inspired Peace Movement: A Call to Action” from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in Plaza 600F.

This event is free and all are welcome to attend.

Drawing on her extensive experience working in the occupied Palestinian territory, Libya, Syria, Yemen and seven other countries in the Middle East and North Africa, Farr’s talk will consider the history and prospects of feminist-inspired peace and human rights activism.

Farr was the first global Gender and Conflict Advisor at United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Bureau for Crisis Prevention and served as Social Development and Gender Advisor at UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People.

She has published widely on issues related to gender and armed conflict, including Back to the Roots: Security Sector Reform and Development (M√ľnster: LIT, 2012) and Sexed Pistols: The Gendered Impacts of Small Arms and Light Weapons (UNU Press, 2009).
