ShanghaiRanking Consultancy is an independent organization that publishes two of the longest-running global university rankings. Both are built on objective, third-party data rather than reputation surveys.

There are two separate rankings performed by ShanghaiRanking:
Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU)
First published in 2003, ARWU assesses more than 2,500 universities each year and publishes the world’s top 1,000. It looks at Nobel Prize and Fields Medal winners, Highly Cited Researchers, papers in Nature and Science, overall research output and performance per faculty member.
Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS)
GRAS ranks universities subject by subject, in 57 subjects across the natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences. Each year it compares about 2,000 universities from more than 90 countries and regions.

Full results for recent editions are published on the ShanghaiRanking website. Because GRAS added new indicators in 2024 and new subjects in 2025, results from different years are not always directly comparable.
