What is EEG?

Your brain has billions of tiny cells called neurons. Neurons “talk” with each other by sending electrical signals. EEG measures these signals through sensors in a net cap. Just like how a stethoscope listens to your heart, EEG listens to your brain. EEG is safe and fun!

What happens during an EEG study?

  • You will wear a net with sensors in it.
  • We will apply a little bit of gel to each sensor.
  • While you are wearing the EEG net, you will do activities on a computer. You might watch movies, look at pictures, read words or listen to someone talking.
  • The sensors in the net will measure your brain waves and tell us how your brain works.
  • After you are done wearing the EEG net you may answer some questionnaires.

Taking part in this research could help us better understand how the brain works when we focus our attention or read. We are especially interested in understanding differences between people in how our brains develop, and how this relates to our mental health and thinking. This could lead to more effective heath and educational services offered to kids and teens.
