Safe celebrations to offer Halloween fun without the fright

There will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy a safe and spirited Halloween at Brock University this year, with a full slate of activities planned for spooky season on campus.

From painting pumpkins and making buttons, to attending a haunted house and dancing the night away, the events — hosted by the University, Brock University Students’ Union, Graduate Students’ Association and others on campus — are meant to encourage a fun and safe Halloween for all.

Halloween night will also see the return of Brock’s Trick or Eat event. On Saturday, Oct. 31, student volunteers — many of them donning costumes — will head out into local neighbourhoods collecting food donations for Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold.

“This volunteer event is a great way for students to celebrate Halloween while supporting their community. Visiting local neighbourhoods to collect non-perishable items is one way that students can support the important work of our community partner, Community Care,” says Kristen Smith, Manager, Off-Campus and Community Experience.

Students participating in the event will gain volunteer hours and fulfil a requirement under the Community Engagement domain of the Campus-Wide Co-Curriculum.

Leading up to Halloween, Brock’s Off-Campus Living Team and community partners will be visiting student neighbourhoods in St. Catharines and Thorold to promote safe and responsible celebrations as part of the annual Don’t Put the Bad in Badger campaign.

“Living off campus means being part of an amazing community,” says Aryan Purkayastha, Off-Campus Living Co-ordinator. “We’re partnering with Niagara Regional Police and St. Catharines and Thorold bylaw staff to remind students to have fun, stay safe and continue to be good neighbours this Halloween.”

The group will share informational materials that encourage appropriate behaviour and educate students about possible fines that can be incurred if municipal bylaws are violated.
