Brock University Professional and Continuing Studies is launching a new micro-credential to help nursing educators integrate artificial intelligence tools into their teaching and professional practice.A new Brock University micro-credential launching next month aims to help nursing educators better understand artificial intelligence (AI) systems as health-care providers and instructors of future nurses.
Offered by Brock Professional and Continuing Studies (Brock PCS), the new micro-credential draws on the AI and nursing education expertise of Associate Professor of Nursing Vanessa Silva e Silva and Assistant Professor of Nursing Amina Silva.
Leading AI Integration in Nursing Education uses a “train the trainer” approach to equipping nursing educators on multiple levels.
“Educators will learn to use AI in their own practice, and they learn how to teach the next generation of nurses how to use AI responsibly in clinical care. An educator can’t teach responsible AI use without practicing themselves,” says Silva.
Over eight weeks of online study, participants will work directly with a variety of AI tools that are relevant to the field of nursing.
Rather than focusing specifically on one tool or set of tools, Silva says participants learn to verify AI outputs for sensitive health-care work and evaluate how AI can be used in education, teaching and their workplaces.
“Educators taking this course will document where AI output is confident but wrong, biased or unsafe, then build a structured workflow for verifying AI content against the evidence,” she says.
Through a unique capstone project, participants will develop components of a governance program that can be adopted and implemented in their workplaces.
The first cohort for Leading AI Integration in Nursing Education will be delivered online asynchronously and is open for registration until Wednesday, Nov. 18 through the Brock PCS website. Any questions about the program can be directed to [email protected]
