Campus Safety warns of taxi scam

Brock’s Campus Safety Services team is urging the University community to be vigilant against a common taxi scam targeting Good Samaritans.

The scam involves individuals posing as taxi drivers and passengers. A vehicle, often with a taxi sign on its roof, will pull over and the “passenger” accomplice will get out, asking passersby for assistance paying for their ride as the driver does not take cash. When a Good Samaritan hands the driver their card to pay, in exchange for cash from the passenger, it is either skimmed or swapped and their data compromised.

Campus Safety is reminding the community to never give a credit or debit card to a stranger and to report any suspicious activity to Campus Safety and the Niagara Regional Police Service.

If approached, always ask to see a taxi’s licence, which must legally be displayed.

If a person claims to need assistance paying for their taxi ride, direct them to contact Campus Safety at 905-688-5550 x3200.

Anyone who has recently experienced a similar incident is asked to contact Campus Safety and the Niagara Regional Police Service.
