Winter weather has arrived and the Brock community is reminded to be cautious on campus and while travelling in slippery conditions.
Students, staff and faculty can help prevent weather-related slips, trips and falls by:
- Checking the weather forecast before travelling and allowing extra time to travel if snowy or icy conditions are expected.
- Checking the Brock Safety app and The Brock News for notifications of campus closures due to inclement weather.
- Wearing footwear designed for slippery weather conditions, such as boots and shoes with deep treads and low heels.
- Clearing snow and ice from car windows, lights and licence plates before driving.
- Parking in lots, or areas of lots, that have already been cleared of snow or ice and trying to park within parking space lines.
- Taking extra care when entering or exiting vehicles as ice can build up between parked vehicles.
- Paying attention to their surroundings and walking slowly on icy or snowy surfaces.
- Staying on cleared pathways and avoiding non-pedestrian areas, such as snowbanks or unofficial paths, and following illuminated travel routes before sunrise and after sunset.
- Keeping feet planted shoulder-width apart to increase stability.
- Brushing off debris from pant legs and footwear and shaking off water from umbrellas and jackets before entering a building.
- Not carrying large objects that reduce visibility and limit the ability to land safely during a fall.
Slippery or unsafe conditions on outdoor pedestrian surfaces can be reported between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. from Monday to Friday by calling the Facilities Management Customer Service One Call Hotline at 905-688-5550 x3717 or by emailing FM@brocku.ca
Urgent slip and trip circumstances can be reported to Campus Safety Services at 905-688-5550 x3200 outside of these hours or when the University is closed.
A report should be made to a person of authority, such as an area supervisor or Brock employee, if an incident, injury, near miss or health and safety hazard is observed. Circumstances should be reported through an injury/incident report. Completed reports and questions can be directed to besafe@brocku.ca
Faculty, staff and students are also encouraged to familiarize themselves with Brock’s Slip, Trip and Fall Prevention Program and to review the snow and ice removal priority map.
