Brock’s Office of Human Rights and Equity (HRE) is launching a new discussion series to foster a greater understanding of anti-oppressive and anti-racist practices across the University.
Beginning Monday, Nov. 25, Critical and Courageous Conversations: Understanding Power, Equity and Justice Through an Intersectional Lens will feature four 90-minute events during the academic year. Open to anyone in the Brock community, the first session will take place in Sankey Chamber from 1:30 to 3 p.m. with the theme of unpacking race and anti-racism.
Articles, interviews, podcasts and social media content will be shared prior to each session as a discussion guide.
Anti-Racism and Inclusion Advisor Shaka Licorish said the series was designed to create a safe space for conversations surrounding power, equity and justice. Inspired by the work of activist and author Ibram X. Kendi, the discussion themes were also designed to align with the priorities contained within the University’s institutional strategic plan, the Scarborough Charter and the Ontario Human Rights Code.
“Through promoting diverse perspectives and thought, the series aims to deepen participants’ understanding of race, racism and anti-racism in Canada,” said Licorish, who created the series and will also be moderating the sessions. “It will also attempt to provide insight into the dismantling of systemic barriers, effectively cultivating a culture of personal growth where diverse individuals and underserved communities are encouraged, celebrated and empowered to develop further.”
The dates of the remaining three sessions in the series will be announced soon and will focus on themes such as identifying racism and furthering awareness, confronting racism, and thoughtful dialogue and reflections.
The event is open to everyone in the Brock community, but it is requested that participants be able to attend all four sessions. Space is limited and anyone interested in attending should register by Tuesday, Nov. 19 via antiracism@brocku.ca
