Student clubs to take centre stage

For third-year Brock Concurrent Education student Jessica Dao, participating in a student club has become an integral part of being a Badger.

“Being a part of a club has greatly deepened my connection to the Brock community and significantly enriched my university experience,” says Dao, who co-founded the Brock Swift Society. “On a personal level, it has allowed me to connect with like-minded individuals who are passionate about music, pop culture and community. It has also given me the opportunity to develop important skills such as financial management, leadership and event organizational skills, which I find will be valuable in my future career.”

Dao formed the club — an inclusive group focused on the art and discography of Taylor Swift — with fellow “Swifties” and third-year Concurrent Education students Brooke Nolan and Jennah Khan after seeing signs promoting student clubs during their first year.

“The Brock Swift Society is more than just a fan club; it is a place where we can engage in thoughtful discussions, support each other’s interest and, most importantly, celebrate what inspires us,” says Dao, who serves as the club’s Treasurer.

With more than 100 ratified student-run groups available, clubs are one of the most important services provided by the Brock University Students’ Union (BUSU) and an essential part of student life at Brock.

Brock students will have a chance to learn more about ways to connect with like-minded peers during BUSU Clubs Week, which runs from Monday, Oct. 7 to Friday, Oct. 11 and includes the BUSU Fall Carnival and a drop-in event allowing students to get to know a variety of clubs. Those attending these Clubs Week activities can enter to win one of five $100 gift cards by scanning QR codes posted at each event.

Students can visit Union Station on Oct. 7 to meet club members, learn the benefits of joining a club and enjoy free games and popcorn. Nine BUSU clubs will switch out every hour from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., giving students the opportunity to meet, interact with and join a club.

The BUSU Fall Carnival will take place on Weather Station Field on Wednesday, Oct. 9 beginning at 3 p.m. Brock students can enjoy free carnival rides, games, henna and face painting as well as low-cost food options. Students will need to show their Brock Cards to enter the event.

“This is the week BUSU’s clubs take centre stage, so students can learn more about how amazing it is to be part of a club and find one that suits their interests. Enjoy engaging interactions with club members, a whimsical carnival on campus and exciting giveaways. It’s a week of unforgettable moments you won’t want to miss,” says BUSU Vice-President, Student Services Shinaya Peiris.

Dao says the Brock Swift Society has been a source of support and fulfilment for her that has enhanced her overall well-being.

“I would definitely encourage every student at Brock to get involved in a club, whether is aligns with an existing passion or something new they want to explore,” she says. “Clubs provide a fantastic opportunity to step outside your comfort zone, meet new people and cultivate skills that complement your academic journey. More importantly, they offer a sense of community that makes university student life richer and more balanced.”

More information on the events, giveaway and student clubs can be found on the BUSU website. The next ratification period for new clubs will run from Monday, Oct. 21 to Friday, Nov. 8.
