Grad gets nod for helping students chart their course

Three-time Brock graduate Brodie Hague (BA ’14, BEd ’14, MS ’16) has been a dedicated member of the University community since he first stepped on campus.

That passion hasn’t waned with time.

To honour his ongoing contributions to his alma mater, Hague received the Brock University Alumni Association’s (BUAA) 2024 David S. Betzner Award during the University’s Alumni Recognition Reception on Sunday, Sept. 22.

Hague’s time as an undergraduate student in Education and Geography cemented his love of teaching, which began when a professor asked him to serve as a teaching assistant for a class.

It took courage and belief in himself to say yes to opportunity, but the experience helped him discover a passion for teaching and engaging students that he has carried throughout his career.

“My professors took a chance on me and gave me the opportunity to be involved in ways I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to be at a larger institution,” he says.

During his graduate studies at Brock, Hague continued to seize opportunities to get involved, building his own skill set and giving back to the community.

Working with the Environmental Sustainability Research Centre’s Undergraduate Committee, he helped to develop the Minor in Sustainability. He was also co-leader of the ESRC’s eCampus Ontario Project, which developed online open module content, and taught a variety of courses through the ESRC and the Department of Geography and Tourism Studies.

His contributions continue to have a lasting impact on the ESRC and Geography programs.

Hague credits the courage he gained at Brock, and seeing all that he could accomplish if he took a leap of faith, for helping him through his career. It’s a lesson he wants to instil in his students today.

He is a dedicated ambassador for Brock, organizing trips to campus for his senior geography students to help them explore their post-secondary education options, and has help a number of former students take their next steps at Brock.

Hague currently teaches geography and serves as assistant department head of Canadian and World Studies at Nora Frances Henderson Secondary School in Hamilton. Outside the classroom, he supports the growth and success of students as a track and field coach.

Nominations for the 2025 alumni awards program are open until Friday, Feb. 21.
