Shannon Kerwin, Associate Professor of Sport Management at Brock University, wrote a piece published in Sports Business Journal about the turnover rate of women holding leadership roles in the sports industry.
She writes:
“In individual cases where women leave, we often blame the woman, saying that it’s her choice to leave — but this fails to address the system. The problem is: Women enter sport with visions of leadership and change; then they’re faced with a labyrinth of barriers that cause them to leave. Policies around dress, informal networking and pay structures implicitly favor men, which drives women away. To remove maze-like barriers to gender equity and keep women in leadership, top management must actively craft gender-inclusive workplaces.”
Kerwin wrote the piece in partnership with The Collective Think Tank. Read the full article on the Sports Business Journal website.
