The Brock University Film Society (BUFS) kicks off the 2023-24 season with a tribute screening of Searching for Sugar Man, which won the Academy Award for Best Feature Documentary in 2013.
The 2012 film, directed by Malik Bendjelloul, documents the impact of Detroit musician Sixto Rodriguez in South Africa.
Rodriguez died last month at the age of 81.
“Rumours of his premature death dogged Sixto Rodriguez throughout his career, but he passed away in early August,” says Anthony Kinik, Associate Professor in Brock’s Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film. “When we got the opportunity to show a new edition of this film, we jumped on it — the screening is a tribute to his memory.”
The screening of Searching for Sugar Man takes place Thursday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. at The Film House.
Additional films for the BUFS season will be announced as they are confirmed.
Tickets for all screenings are available at the Film House in downtown St. Catharines. General admission is $9.50 or $7.50 for Film House members, plus tax. Free BUFS memberships are also available on screening nights.
BUFS will continue to run monthly screenings through April. For more details, visit the BUFS website.
