EDITOR’S NOTE: Due to inclement weather, the opening reception for the Juried Exhibition was rescheduled to Friday, March 10.
The talents of Brock University students have been combined to create a captivating arts exhibition opening Friday, March 3.
Hosted by the Department of Visual Arts (VISA), the annual Juried Exhibition drew more than 50 student artists, who submitted more than 150 works for the jury process.
“We want to thank all of the students who submitted their work for this exhibition,” says Gallery Co-ordinator Sonya Marie de Lazzer, who expressed gratitude to participants for their willingness to share about themselves, their creative practices and how that is translated into their work.
The exhibition, which runs until Saturday, March 11, is one the department always looks forward to, de Lazzer says, because it gives jurors and the audience a glimpse into the minds and creative expressions of the student body. Through the work and contributions of students, she finds inspiration to curate and install the works in meaningful ways.
“It always feels like we get a really special and intimate look into what so many students are working on, what they are exploring and processing,” she says. “Since the call goes out to current students across all departments and programs, it is imbued with an additional layer of uniqueness. Brock students are really the heart of our community, and we are very lucky to be able to share and celebrate their work.”
Associate Professor Donna Szoke and Studio Instructor Bruce Thompson were invited as jurors, tasked with carefully assessing and selecting a collection of dynamic pieces from the submissions. The resulting exhibition features varied approaches to art that consider process, concepts, technique and scale. The artists explore a number of questions around intimacy, desire, loss, control, identity and time through a range of mediums, including painting, drawing, photography, books, animation, sculpture and mixed media.
The 2023 Juried Exhibition features 22 original pieces by: Nimea Ariana, Emily Au, Sydney Bolton, Morgan Sarah Jane Branton, Devin Brzozowski-Greenwood, Glory Inegbedion, Mary Ivison, Lindsay Liboiron, Lou Losier, Sabrina Luckasavitch, Emily MacDonald, Mia Merritt, Christy Mitchell, Jamine Monk, Laurie Morrison, Sarah Puckett, Eden Rioux, Véronique Roussea, Isabella Saranchuk and Mia Vaccarella.
An opening reception will be held Friday, March 3 at 4 p.m. in the Visual Arts Gallery and Student Exhibition Space in the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts. Students, staff and faculty along with the public are welcomed to join. Please visit the VISA website for more details.
