The Department of Sociology is inviting Brock students to learn more about where studies in Sociology and Critical Criminology can lead at an upcoming career event.
“What Can I Do (And Who Can I Be) with a Sociology or Critical Criminology Degree?” takes place Wednesday, March 15 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Sankey Chamber.
The event is primarily designed for those taking Sociology, Critical Criminology or general Social Sciences, but all are welcome to attend and learn more from alumni working in education, research, business and social services. Participating alumni include:
- Vince Pacilli (BA ’21), Gay Men’s Sexual Health and Harm Reduction Co-ordinator at AIDS Committee of Toronto
- Kailene Jackson (BA ’20, MA ’21), Co-Founder and Director of Programming at Civiconnect and Instructor at Niagara College
- Lindsay Hayhurst (BA ’05), Curriculum Development Specialist eLearnng at Brock’s Learning Services
- Tassia Gabbidon (BA ’20), Gender and Sexual Violence Intake and Support Co-ordinator for Brock Human Rights and Equity and Associate Therapist at Niagara Wellness Centre
Academic Advisor Lindsay Shaw says the event aims to “disrupt preconceived notions” about where students can take a degree in these fields.
“Students have a unique and incredibly privileged opportunity to cultivate their intellectual curiosity and social awareness and develop their capacity to engage in a critical, informed and self-reflective way with social institutions,” says Shaw. “As alumni working in important social institutions, we believe our speakers have a lot to say about this lifelong learning process.”
Department Chair Mary-Beth Raddon hopes the event will help students gain perspective.
“Many students are understandably anxious about uncertain futures,” she says. “At Career Night, students can take inspiration from the stories of alumni and be reminded that their degree learning equips them well for many endeavours in work and life.”
To help students understand future possibilities, the Department is also running an alumni spotlight series on its Facebook and Instagram pages.
