From housing affordability to rising costs of living, financial issues are dominating headlines and conversations across Canada.
An upcoming online seminar will explore integrating financial literacy in Canadian curricula and going beyond personal finance in financial literacy education. Part of the Transforming Futures Lab Speaker Series, the free seminar takes place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27.
The lecture will pay specific attention to financial resilience, which is the ability to navigate both predictable and unpredictable financial decisions and challenges in life.
Financial resilience is a goal of the National Financial Literacy Strategy, explains Steven Khan, Assistant Professor of Educational Studies and one of the event’s organizers. He adds that the topics covered in the seminar will be of interest to educators at all levels as well as teacher candidates, graduate students and the general public.
“Attendees will leave with a greater understanding of the relationships among curricula for developing financial literacy, the concept of financial resilience and an awareness of the limits of education in the current regulatory environment,” he said.
The seminar features two guest speakers: Alexandre Cavalcante, Assistant Professor in the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto, and Gail Henderson, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Law at Queen’s University.
Cavalcante will speak about financial literacy education in Canadian curricula while Henderson will discuss issues related to financial resilience and the national strategy.
The event will not provide financial advice.
