Guest lecturer to demonstrate risk assessment using emerging textual analysis system

Textual analysis has recently become a popular tool for researchers and practitioners as it helps them to better describe, interpret and understand texts. On Friday, Sept. 9, leading scholar Rajendra Srivastava will share a new analysis system with the Brock community.

Srivastava, a Professor Emeritus of Accounting and Information Systems at the University of Kansas School of Business, recently proposed a new measure of detecting similarity between two documents, the Vector Similarity Metric, which avoids discrepancies of the current most popular method.

He will present his research at a joint session of the Goodman School of Business’ Luncheon Speaker Series and the CPA Centre for Public Policy and Innovation in Accounting’s (CPA-CPPIA) Brownbag Series in a talk titled “Analysis of Corporate Filings: What can we learn?”

As part of his presentation, Srivastava will demonstrate this cloud-based technology used on corporate filings for assessing various risks, including financial risk.

Published in many accounting, AI and physics journals, such as The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research and Journal of Management Information Systems, Srivastava has published more than 110 academic articles. His research has also resulted in patentable ideas, including SeekiNF — an intelligent search engine developed at the University of Kansas that provides tools to help perform textual analysis.

The Goodman speaker series provides Goodman faculty, staff and students with an informal opportunity to listen and discuss recent advances in research, teaching and practices with business colleagues virtually.

Srivastava’s talk will take place from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in Sankey Chamber. Goodman faculty, staff and students are invited to attend. Members of the Brock community interested in attending are encouraged to email Crystal Li at sli3@brocku.ca to reserve a seat.
