Virtual launch to be held for student book on ancient Greece

The public is invited to virtually join students from Brock’s Department of Classics and Archaeology in launching their new digital book this week.

Houses and Households in Ancient Greece is an open-access book created by the students in CLAS 4V53/5V53. It will be launched with the St. Catharines Public Library during a public online event Thursday, April 14, at 6:30 p.m.

Over the course of the semester, students have researched and written chapters on themes that explore the full complexity of the ancient Greek household, including gender, status, wealth and marginalized groups. Each chapter integrates textual, visual and archaeological material.

Collaborating with their classmates, students have experienced the full cycle of producing a published work, from considering how to present their research to a general audience, experiencing the peer review process and learning the importance of copyrights.

Students used the eCampus Ontario Pressbooks platform to construct their digital book. The open library platform provides free access to digital textbooks and scholarly works created under Creative Commons licensing.

The Zoom event will include a presentation on ancient Greek households as well as a talk about the project itself. The event is free, but preregistration is required via Eventbrite.
