Brock University’s 109th Convocation ceremony will be delivered virtually.
The decision comes as Ontario and the rest of the world continues to deal with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Earlier this month, the University announced the remainder of its Winter Term, along with the Spring/Summer Term will be delivered online. While the goal remains to transition back to many in-person classes for the Fall Term, with Spring Convocation set for the week of June 7 to 11, it’s unlikely public health restrictions will allow for any large, in-person gatherings that a traditional Convocation ceremony would require.
Instead, the University will deliver its third Virtual Convocation, offering students and their families a personalized graduation day experience that will launch on Friday, June 18. Brock alumni who weren’t able to celebrate their Convocation in person will be recognized in person at some point in the future when it’s safe to do so.
“We would have liked to be able to celebrate this momentous occasion in person for all our students; however, the health and safety of our entire Brock community must be our top priority,” said President Gervan Fearon. “The Virtual Convocation experience is an exciting alternative to the traditional in-person ceremony and will allow students and their families from around the world to mark an incredible accomplishment in a safe manner. Most importantly, Convocation will be a special moment for our students and an opportunity to celebrate their academic and professional milestone.”
After going live on the morning of Friday, June 18, the Virtual Convocation portal will remain online and available to students and the wider Brock community.
Shortly after Virtual Convocation launches, all graduating students will be mailed a package that includes their degree parchment, a Convocation program, an alumni pin, a copy of Surgite magazine, other information from the Brock University Alumni Association, information on how to purchase a degree frame from the Brock Campus Store and a bag of Class of 2021 confetti.
Graduands are reminded that the deadline to submit an Intent to Graduate form is Monday, Feb. 1. They must submit the form through the Brock student portal. Students must also update their address and phone number on their student portal to receive their Convocation package, which will be mailed out following the virtual ceremonies in June.
