Brock students invited to become Canada Games media leads

A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is now available to Brock University students.

Interested Brock students are being sought by the 2021 Canada Summer Games to serve as volunteer media leads.

Though the Games are still more than a year away, the media leads will be selected by organizers in the coming weeks for the more than 15 competition and ceremonies venues that will take place throughout Niagara.

Media leads will help prepare and operate news media services, ensuring the facilities are equipped and fully operational. Activities include providing logistical support to media; helping journalists secure interviews with competitors and officials from across Canada; ensuring media accreditation; managing photographer access to events; and generating story ideas for media.

Monthly planning meetings and training sessions for the roles will begin in September 2020, and will serve as an ideal learning experience for anyone looking to develop media and public relations skills.

In some cases, students may also be eligible to seek academic credit for their involvement, which can be obtained through a specific course, a directed reading or a special projects course available in specific programs.

With the July 24 application deadline quickly approaching, Julie Stevens, Associate Professor of Sport Management and Special Advisor to the President — Canada Games, hopes interested volunteers will embrace the opportunity to serve their community.

“It is key that we capitalize on the 2021 Canada Games coming to Niagara,” said Stevens. “Brock is doing this through an innovative experiential learning collaboration with the 2021 Canada Games Host Society. Working with the Host Society to dedicate planning volunteer roles for Brock students is going to provide unique learning opportunities for students across many programs. I am excited to work with our Canada Games academic committee, Niagara 2021 staff and students to make this happen.”

Further information on the media lead roles and the course credits they can lead to can be found on ExperienceBU or by emailing Christopher Seguin, Co-ordinator-Media and Communications, Niagara 2021 Canada Summer Games, at cseguin@2021canadagames.ca
