BUFS conjures macabre and mystery with Suspiria

The beauty of dance violently collides with a twisted tale of murder in the reimagining of Italian horror classic Suspiria, the latest offering of the Brock University Film Society (BUFS).

Described by lead actress Tilda Swinton as “horr-epic,” Suspiria, directed by Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name), will be screened at the Film House in downtown St. Catharines on Thursday, Jan. 24.

A darkness swirls at the centre of a world-renowned dance company, one that will engulf the troupe’s artistic director (Swinton), an ambitious young dancer (Dakota Johnson) and a grieving psychotherapist (Lutz Ebersdorf). A recently expelled student who was guarding a terrifying dark secret is murdered and the young dancer suspects that the school might be involved.

Guadagnino’s version of the 1977 original is “a gorgeous, hideous, uncompromising film,” says New York Magazine. “While it seeks to do many things, settling our minds about the brutality of the past and human nature is not one of them.”

Tickets for all BUFS shows are available at the Film House in the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre (PAC) on the evening of screenings. General admission is $9.50 or $7 for members, plus tax. Memberships are available through the Film House website.

Visit the BUFS web page for a full list of this season’s selections. A calendar of films coming to the PAC through January is posted on the Film House website. Look for the red B that indicates a BUFS-hosted screening.

For more than 40 years, the Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film has hosted the film society (previously known as a series) to bring some of the best in independent, international and Canadian cinema to St. Catharines.
