BUFS presents social satire Sorry to Bother You

Dark comedy Sorry to Bother You will make moviegoers not only laugh, but also think as they take in the latest screening by the Brock University Film Society on Thursday, Oct. 4.

The feature film directorial debut of hip-hop legend Boots Riley takes place in an alternate present-day version of Oakland. Telemarketer Cassius “Cash” Green (Lakeith Stanfield) discovers the key to professional success, which propels him into a macabre universe of greed. But Cash’s professional success raises serious red flags with his girlfriend Detroit (Tessa Thompson), a performance artist and minimum-wage striver who’s secretly part of a Banksy-style activist collective. As his friends and co-workers organize in protest of corporate oppression, Cash falls under the spell of his company’s cocaine-snorting CEO Steve Lift (Armie Hammer), who offers him a salary beyond his wildest dreams.

Brian Tallerico (rogerebertbert.com) calls Sorry to Bother You “one of the funniest movies of the year,” but it’s also a “fearless dissection of identity politics, corporate malevolence and the American tendency to look the other way when confronted with horror.”

For more than 40 years, the Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film has hosted the film society (previously known as a series) to bring some of the best in independent, international and Canadian cinema to St. Catharines.

Tickets are available at the Film House at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre on the evening of screenings. General admission is $9 or $7 for members, plus tax. Memberships are available through the Film House website.
