Campus Security warns of apparent fraud on campus

Campus Security is warning the Brock community about an apparent fraud on campus after an incident in which students were being asked to donate to a children’s charity.

Shortly after 4 p.m. on Thursday Jan. 18, a female student was approached in Thistle Complex, near Tim Hortons, by a male with a pamphlet in hand, who pressured her into donating to a charity.

The male, believed to be between 27 and 30 years old, had a portable debit machine that the student swiped her debit card on, making a donation.

After walking away and realizing the suspicious nature of the incident, the female returned to the area but the man was gone.

She immediately reported the incident to Campus Security, who helped her contact her bank to cancel the debit card. The incident has also been reported to Niagara Regional Police.

Campus Security said surveillance video showed the man also approaching other students in the area prior to the reported incident. No suspect has been located, however Campus Security believes the same male was involved in similar incidents at other post-secondary institutions in December.

Campus Security reminds members of the Brock community that solicitation of this nature is prohibited on campus, and warns against providing solicitors access to a debit or credit card to make a transaction.

Anyone who has information about this or similar incidents, or who thinks they have seen the male in question, should contact Campus Security by calling x3200 or using any of Brock’s emergency phones.
