The French film C’est La Vie kicks off the 2018 Brock University Film Series on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

The English-subtitled version of the French comedy Le Sens de la fête (A Sense of Occasion), C’est La Vie is a 2017 film by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano that tells the story of a wedding being staged in a 17th-century château on the outskirts of Paris.

It’s up to Max, a long-suffering wedding planner, to make sure the event is a hit — against all odds — on what is to be his final engagement. The arrangements are overblown and ridiculous, the technological limitations are considerable, the staff are incompetent, the wedding singer is a male prima donna, the groom is a tireless micro-manager, and Max’s partner has chosen this occasion to wage open rebellion.

C’est La Vie, a hit at the Toronto International Film Festival, was a highlight of TIFF’s closing night gala.

For more than 40 years, the Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film has hosted Brock’s film series to bring some of the best in international, independent and Canadian cinema to St. Catharines. Films, all selected from the TIFF circuit, screen most Wednesdays until April 4 at the Pen Centre’s Landmark Cinemas.

Tickets for each screening are $10 for adults and $5 for Brock students and can be purchased in the lobby of Landmark Cinemas each Wednesday night. Season tickets are also available. For more information and a full lineup, see the BUFS website.
