With September around the corner, Brock library staff are preparing for the arrival of thousands of students. The library’s E-reserve service for course readings is among the many areas of focus as the library gears up for the fall term, and staff are reminding instructors that the program is available to them.

The library uses the online system Ares to create an easy and efficient process for students to access their course readings. Library staff are ready and available to do the work of ensuring course readings are copyright-compliant and follow the AODA standards.

The system integrates easily into Sakai, allowing students to access E-reserves or locate print-reserve material quickly. The readings are not limited to just articles but can also be used for book chapters, streaming video or audio, web links and more.

Due to legal challenges of fair dealing with copyright materials for the purpose of education, there have been recent developments in the copyright landscape in Canada. Library staff work closely with University legal counsel to ensure that Brock is operating within copyright law as well as AODA standards.

For instructors, the service is easy to use. Send the library your course syllabus with a list of course readings. Library staff will locate the material and ensure it’s covered under one of the University’s existing subscriptions, or users’ rights such as ‘fair dealing.’ In cases where it is not, staff will seek out copyright permission to use the material.
